In Italy's Lodgings in
PIEDMONT

The world fell in love with Piedmont during the Winter Olympics of 2006. If you watched a variety of events, you saw that the region is far more than its capital, Turin. Of course, this is a surprising city in itself: wrongly overlooked by foreign tourists, it offers stately broad avenues reminiscent of Paris but with the added bonus of covered sidewalks on either side, to keep off the rain, the snow and the sunshine. Actually, because the region is nestled below the Alps in the northwestern corner of Italy, and because it was under French domain for many years, you will find traditions here that may remind you of its neighbor. For instance, you’ll be served a lot more elaborate meat dishes, and pungent, soft cheeses, washed down with hearty red wines (made from the same grapes that form the basis for Bordeaux). And when your meal is over, Turin is world-famous for its chocolates and coffee houses, so it’s also a great place for a post-prandial treat! Pasta also takes takes second place to rice on Piedmontese tables, and if you drive or train here from Milan, you will pass many miles of rice fields such as those made famous in the film Bitter Rice. And if it sounds like we are on a decidedly culinary route through this region, it’s because Piedmont is a gastronome’s paradise. This is the home of the world’s best truffles, and its hills are lined with the most beautiful vineyards in the country, in our opinion. Nestled among those hills are many delightful hill towns that have escaped the renown (and thus the crowds) of some others farther to the south. Piedmont is definitely worth a visit, especially in the fall! In Italy Online is proud to offer a wide selection of lodgings throughout Italy, personally chosen and inspected by our editor. If you are new to our site, we welcome you! Please take a few moments to learn how to book with us and why to book with us.
