Tucked
right in the geographical center of the nation, Umbria likes to call itself “the green heart of Italy,” and
rightly so. Not only does it possess some of the most fertile farmlands in the country, it also has an imposing
ridge of dark-green mountains running its entire length as well as across its northern borders. This means
that, unlike in Tuscany, here you can drive along a nice, flat four-lane highway while gawking at the scenery – instead
of being INSIDE the scenery, which can sometimes be a little daunting! As you wend your way from one valley
to another, you’ll want to stop along the way in some of the most pristine medieval villages Italy has
to offer, including Todi, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello, Trevi, Norcia, Narni and the most unforgettable of
them all, Gubbio. And guess what: these aren’t even Umbria’s major attractions! The Big Three
are Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis and site of two landmark churches and a foreboding castle; Orvieto,
home to what many consider the most perfect gothic church in Italy; and the regional capital, Perugia, famed
for its perfectly preserved cobbled streets, its patrician palaces and oh yes, its delicious chocolate! In
Italy Online is proud to offer a wide selection of lodgings in Umbria, personally chosen and inspected
by our staff. If you are new to our site, we welcome you! Please take a few moments to learn how
