Dear Jessica,
Thanks for the welcome home, which was the first (and so far the only one) I've received! I'm still trying to come down to the "reality" of leaving behind the Italian sun and surrendering to the drab and grey weather of Ireland.
It'd be my pleasure to let you know any comments I might have - I hope they're
of use to you. First of all, let me say we will without a doubt use Initaly.com
again and will recommend you to friends and family. We found the company
to be very professional and insightful as well as friendly and personable.
For our second week in Tuscany we went through a different
company and, although we had a ball in an amazing place called Casole d'Elsa,
that company turned out to be light years behind Initaly.com.
Ok, I feel I'm in danger of launching into a session of "extolling the
pleasures of Italy", which I'm sure you're already well aware of, so instead
I'll extol the pleasures of Colli Fiorentini. The location of the place was
superb - a peaceful spot in the hills with breathtaking views and yet just
a short hop into Florence. The premises was top notch - every mod con we could
possibly need, very spacious and beautiful interior design. The complimentary
bottle of wine awaiting us was perfect after our day's journey. One quibble
we would have is that after we had settled in we scarcely caught a glimpse
of or could locate the Guazzini family (Elizabeth Guazzini was away and her
son was left in charge). While we accept that the whole point of self-catering
is to be independent, it still would have been nice to be given some local
info: e.g. which direction shops and restaurants were in, nearby places of
interest. We would have loved to have booked a meal in that place across the
road or to have taken part in the weekly pizza session but couldn't find anyone
to ask! On the morning of our departure Elizabeth had returned and presented
us with a leaflet outlining local places of interest, by which time it was
too late to learn of the nearby Arcetri's Observeratory or places where Galileo
Galilei lived and worked (which we would've been thrilled to see!). Anyway,
as I've said, this is just a quibble and we really had a lovely time. We wouldn't
hesitate to stay there again.
Now I've got to find my umbrella and head off to work (though my umbrella will
probably get trashed by that storm brewing up outside). Wish me luck...
Best Regards
Dermot A.
