Hotel Abbazia

This small historic hotel is loaded with charm, but it has two fundamental aspects that place it above other Venetian inns, to our mind: to get there you don't have to cross any bridges (with their myriad luggage-hindering steps), and the staff is friendly and warm. If you will be traveling for a while, and thus will have more than one "wheelie" bag with you on your trip, being able to take a short vaporetto ride, step off the boat and walk no more than 100 yards on a flat, smooth sidewalk will definitely get your stay in Venice off to a good start.

Location: On Calle Priuli dei Cavaletti, which although only 50 yards from Santa Lucia station, is actually in the trendy and very authentic neighborhood of Cannaregio. The hotel is not on Lista di Spagna, which you may have read about in guidebooks. It sits at the end of a narrow alley, facing onto a quiet square that few tourists ever find despite its incredibly central location. Click here to see a map.

Transportation: The #1 vaporetto, which you take from Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto parking lot, stops about 100 yards away. The #41 and #51 vaporetti stop literally in front of the alley.

Features: The hotel occupies a former monastery, so the ground floor common rooms still look like the original 17th-century abbey, with the addition of comfortable modern furniture. Rooms are furnished strictly in antique Venetian style, with brocade walls and upholstery, gilded bedsteads and desks, and marble, parquet or carpeted floors. Each of the 40 rooms has soundproof walls and fireproof door, a small desk, air conditioning, window screens, direct-dial telephone, DSL line, satellite TV and mini-bar, plus a private bathroom with hair dryer. Most bathrooms have a brand-new stall shower or a bathtub with splatter screen; a few have tubs with curtains. Superior quad rooms can have a queen bed plus two single beds (or even three single beds if they are for small children); these rooms have a walk-in closet, one has a bathroom with tub and separate stall shower. Rooms overlooking the garden are quiet, but the street is a narrow one with very little foot traffic, so it is rarely noisy either. All non-smoking rooms are superiors.

Facilities: Cocktail bar, breakfast room (also served in the lovely garden in warmer months), DSL connection in the room for 5 Euro/day (PC and cable available on request if needed).
