Baglio Siciliano Di Monreale

In days gone by, there were many structures in Sicily known by the denomination baglio. Usually they were buildings that resembled square doughnuts. The ground floors of these four wings contained open porticoes that lined a broad inner courtyard where the residents could sit and relax on warm summer evenings and sunny winter mornings.

Sometimes an aristocratic family would use the baglio as a pleasant country retreat. Other times the enclaves served a more prosaic purpose. This graceful salmon-pink building was once a paper mill set on the plain of Monreale just outside of Palermo. Although it is a mere ten kilometers from the city center, it seems centuries removed from the frantic pace of Sicily's capital, and makes a superb spot for travelers who are driving. For hassle-free sightseeing, just leave your car in the ample parking lot and take the bus into town: it stops in front of the hotel.

You will love the atmosphere at this wonderful country inn. Cool tile floors, painted casement ceilings, the glassed-in portico, the quiet courtyard, and just the right amount of antiques and traditional accessories await you as soon as you enter. The 27 guest rooms all have comfortable beds, satellite TV, soundproof windows, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, wall safe, mini bar and private modern bathrooms with hair dryers. Although there are no sea view rooms, many rooms offer stunning views of Palermo and the Conca d'Oro (the seaside valley which is so fertile that it was long ago baptised "The Golden Shell"). An elevator takes you to the second floor.

After an exciting day seeing the countless wonders of Palermo, or visiting Monreale's cathedral of Santa Maria la Nuova, the finest example of Norman architecture in Sicily (only 3 km away), you will welcome the chance to have a wonderful dinner in the hotel's elegant restaurant, Absidi, followed by a soothing nightcap at Regia Trazzera, the piano bar. When the time comes to leave, Baglio Siciliano Di Monreale's strategic position makes it easy to reach Palermo's Falcone e Borsellino Airport (35 km) or to set off on the highway headed for another beautiful corner of this most magical island.
