Character: Classic Italian beachside resort with vast grounds, a private beach and myriad activities for a quintessential Mediterranean vacation. And you can even enjoy some cultural forays as well: for example, visit the Etruscan tombs at Populonia; take a ferry to Elba Island; ride a mining train into the earth to learn about minerals; spend an afternoon at the European Center for the Conservation of Turtles (a delightful wildlife park); take the kids to the Cavallino Matto amusement park or the enchanting Tarot Garden; explore the medieval town of Grosseto and the castle of Piombino. Size: The property is enormous: with over 80 acres of pine forests, oak forests and manicured grounds, even though maximum occupancy here is 1000 people, you'll never feel crowded because there are so many places for people to relax and play. Indeed, we visited on a day when the property was sold out and we hardly saw anyone except at the beach, which is so long that even there, you are never crowded. Features: Three heated swimming pools; four tennis courts; 1km-long sandy beach equipped with everything including a wooden sidewalk and cafeteria; restaurant; snack bar, pizzeria and supermarket; soccer field, volleyball court and basketball court; large playground, free parking outside your door; wireless hot spots throughout the property. Disadvantages: No air conditioning, but the sea breezes are excellent and the rooms are very well insulated so it is rarely hot inside. Car needed: Yes.

Public Transportation: Trains stop frequently at San Vincenzo station, 10km away (however, you need a car to stay here). Ferries for Elba Island leave often from nearby Piombino, and this makes for an easy day trip.             Rooms: 87 hotel rooms, including doubles, triples, and family rooms. All rooms are in single or double unit bungalows in the oak or pine forest, ranging from 10 yards to 150 yards from the water. These units look uninviting from outside, but inside they are airy and light and spacious, and very well insulated and ventilated. Triple rooms have a queen-size bed and a single futon. Family rooms have a queen-sized bed and bunk beds. Large windows, tile floors and ceiling fans keep the rooms cool, and there is central heating for colder months.             Features: Satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, safe. Bathrooms have stall showers and hair dryers.             Facilities: Three heated swimming pools (including one for kids); four tennis courts; large playground; 1km-long beach with all equipment and wooden sidewalk for easy access; wireless Internet access in many public areas; spa with sauna, Turkish bath, Hammam, water therapy and massage; huge fitness room with many different machines and pilates (one-time fee of 10 Euro/person); restaurant facing the water; cafeteria right off the beach; snack bar; coffee shop; supermarket; ATM machine; free parking outside your room; entertainment for kids; chapel on Sundays.
