Garda Lakeside Residence

Northern Europeans have long known about the superb scenic splendors of Lake Garda, whose glimmering blue waters stretch far off on the horizon interrupted only by the picturesque Island of Garda. The beautifully sculptured coastline encompasses many different microcosms. There's the fairy-tale town of Sirmione with its turreted castle, the historic turn-of-the-century resort towns, majestic Mount Baldo - which the locals affectionately call the sleeping giant - and there are the beautiful silver olive groves that produce what many consider to be the best oil in all of Italy.

Hotels abound alongside the lake, but you need to be careful where you stay, in our opinion. The southern rim, between Desenzano and Sirmione, can be extremely congested and hectic. We like the western shore, starting at Gardone where this small family-owned and -operated residence is located. Although there's plenty of activity here too, with well-equipped private beaches, great little restaurants and lively night clubs, the towns are much smaller and quainter, and the area lies within a National Park filled with olive groves, lemon and palm trees, bougainvillea and rare Mediterranean herb bushes. During many months of the year it is normal to see luxuriant flowers and century-old trees against a backdrop of snowy alpine mountains.

Guests of the Florida stay in elegant air-conditioned apartments for 2 to 6 people. Type A De Luxe (540 sq. ft., sleeps 2 to 6) has a large, comfortable living room with a single day bed that converts to two excellent single beds, a kitchen, a double bedroom, an alcove for a third bed, a bathroom with tub and wall shower, and private balcony. Type B (430 sq. ft., sleeps 2 to 4) has a living room with the same type of daybed, a kitchen, a double bedroom, a bathroom with tub and wall shower, and private balcony. Type C (325 sq. ft., sleeps 2) has a living room with double bed and kitchenette, a bathroom with double stall shower and vine-covered garden space. Two C units can be connected for a two bedroom, two-bathroom suite for families. Le Palme Suites (393 sq. ft., sleeps 2) are in a separate building and offer hand-painted ceilings, Venetian-style furnishings, a bedroom with twin beds or king-size bed, divided by a cabinet from the living area and kitchenette, plus a bathroom with a state-of-the-art Jacuzzi shower. There are five of these suites and they share a large balcony that faces the lake (each suite has a table and chairs, as well as two sun chairs). Two suites can be combined to form a Double Suite, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Each apartment has magnificent lake views, as well as reserved parking, satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, separate modem port, lots of wardrobe space, trouser valet, safe and electrical converter plugs. Kitchens are equipped with a full refrigerator/freezer, electric range top, toaster, microwave oven, espresso pot and plenty of dishes, pots and pans. Le Palme Suites also have a dishwasher.

Also on the property, surrounded by luxuriant oleander and lush banks of colorful flowers, are a panoramic swimming pool for adults (measuring 88 x 30 feet), a small pool for children and a spacious terrace reserved for sunbathing, as well as a giant outdoor chess board and barbecue facilities. On evenings when you prefer to dine out, the friendly staff are delighted to recommend romantic lakeside restaurants or quaint, cheerful trattorias nestled amongst the olive groves and vineyards.

Whether you're planning a family holiday or a romantic getaway, you'll find plenty to do at Lake Garda, which has long been one of Italy's best-organized holiday destinations. Only a ten-minute walk from the hotel is the Vittoriale, Gabriele D'Annunzio's extravagantly furnished home. Just down the shore is Sirmione, a delightful town-within-a-castle that also offers fabulous spa treatments and massages. Kids will love Italy's answer to Disneyland, Gardaland, a theme park that can hold its own against any in the world. Only slightly farther afield are the exquisite art cities of Bergamo (mysteriously overlooked by most American travel writers) and Verona. Also within an hour's drive are Mantova and Vicenza and Trento, treasure troves of history and world-class art. Set aside a day for an excursion into the southern Alps, and be sure to save plenty of time to relax beside the sparkling waters of beautiful Lake Garda.
