Park Hotel Le Fonti

Our favorite Tuscan hill town is Volterra, partly because it has a very interesting (but not too big!) collection of artworks and architecture covering just about every period as far back as the Etruscans, and also because it is rarely crowded with The Dread Tourist Horde. It's close enough to the coast to allow for a swim from June through September, it's also close to the thermal waterfalls at Saturnia and to another town that is a tourist mecca: San Gimignano. If you don't want to battle the crowds there but long to see that world-famous skyline which caused it to be called the Manhattan of the Middle Ages, guess what? The very best view of it is on the road from Volterra. Until recently there hasn't been much choice of nice places to stay in the area, but in 2002 this hotel was completely renovated, and its position just on the edge of the historical center makes it an ideal base for your explorations in the southwestern quadrant of the Tuscany region.

Location: On a hill right outside the old town of Volterra. You can walk into town in about ten minutes. The coast and San Gimignano are each less than half an hour's drive away, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Corsica. Saturnia, Pitigliano and Sovana are under an hour's drive. Rooms: 67, including doubles, triples, junior suites and one very special suite. The junior suites are larger than the double rooms, and they have a couch. Some of them have balconies with views of Volterra's castle; ten of them are on the ground floor and have their own private patios facing the pool. Some of these rooms can be connecting, for families or friends.

Features: Every room has direct-dial telephone, electronic safe, air conditioning, satellite TV, luggage rack, and mini-bar. Bathrooms have bathtubs with showers and glass doors, and hair dryers.

Facilities: Elevator; gourmet restaurant whose chef formerly served on The Love Boat; exquisite 30 X 45-foot swimming pool with snack service; separate children's pool; sauna; parking.
