Hotel Palace

Travelers who wish to enjoy the beauties and wonders of Lake Como without a car should consider this venerable old hotel. Occupying a 19th-century palazzo next door to a 21-st century annex, it is right at the edge of the lake, yet a short walk from the rail station, shops, restaurants and public transportation connecting you to all points on the lake, as well as Milan and Switzerland. Stay for a few days and spend a couple of them visiting the spectacular gardens and villas on the lake, then whiz up to St. Moritz for a day, or into Milan to see The Last Supper or La Scala, or do some serious shopping. Como is also a world center for silk manufacturing, so if you like elegant attire, you will find plenty to admire here. And when your delightful day is over, book a lakeside table at the hotel restaurant so you can watch the sunset paint the nearby Alps pink before hundreds of little lights begin to sparkle across the water.
