Marmorata Hotel

A Connoisseur's Amalfi Coast Tour

Among the most spectacular coastlines in the world is the one hugging the Sorrentine Peninsula south of Naples. Bright green splashes of ancient citrus groves and vineyards alternate here with the sparkling whitewashed walls of summer villas and the soft cream-colored façades of stately old hotels. Everywhere, glimpsed for a moment as you wend your way along the deliciously narrow roads, is the gleaming blue sea. On clear days the isle of Capri stands out along the horizon, just a short boat ride away. Poets have been swooning over these vistas since the time of the Romans, when nearby Pompeii was the seaside playground of the rich and famous. The Roman Empire is of course long gone, but the beautiful Amalfi Coast still remains a mecca for today's jet set and the discerning travelers of the world.

In this small corner of Italy, even the hotels are spectacular. Many have been built right into the cliffs overlooking the sea, wing by wing and annex by annex, so that today they are literally part of the hillside. The Marmorata, a friendly four-star hotel located below Ravello and halfway between Amalfi and Maiori, is a classic example. Safely ensconced above its own landing stage and private access to the sea, it is a haven of peace and privacy, seasoned with a special touch of luxury.

Originally a paper mill, the Marmorata is now a beautifully renovated complex managed personally by its owners, the Camera D'Afflitto family. Its comfortable rooms are furnished with a nautical theme - down to the embroidery on the linen sheets! All face the sea and feature air conditioning, radio, satellite television, direct-dial telephone and mini-bar, and a private bathroom with tub, wall shower and glass door, as well as complementary slippers. Superiors also have a single daybed, as well as a whirlpool bathtub, and a few can connect to a triple room to create a two-bathroom family suite. The superior quad room is for two adults and two children and has a double bed, two single beds, a whirlpool bathtub and sea view. Junior suites are larger and feature a separate sitting area and spacious bathroom with whirlpool tub; some are actually separate little houses tucked away in the rocks, with private gardens or patios (these rooms cannot be reached by elevator).

The Marmorata Hotel uses its location to the fullest. You'll enjoy sunbathing or swimming in the sea or in the swimming pool, and if you are more landbound, there are also a lovely garden and several panoramic terraces. Cocktails and gourmet meals are served with grace in the hotel's bar and restaurant. Be sure to try the lemon cake, which is as light as a feather. If you're planning to do some touring while in the area, a glance at the chart below will show you that Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento are all just down the road. Only slightly farther are Pompeii and Capri, and the Naples airport.

Imagine opening your eyes in the early morning and the first sight you see is the azure blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Relaxation fills your spirit as you prepare for another day's adventures on the Amalfi Coast. The Marmorata Hotel is your first step towards living this incredible dream.
