Hotel Il Melograno

Normally, we at In Italy Online are not partial to modern hotels, but the minute we saw this one, we knew it was an exception to our rule. Nestled in a lush garden with fabulous Tuscan views from each of the rooms, it has just about everything: a great location just outside one of the least-known hilltowns in Tuscany and very close to the world-renowned spa at Saturnia; peace and quiet; a friendly staff who treat you like family; a very atmospheric restaurant right on-site; and four-star amenities at three-star prices. Whether you are in the area to try out some spa treatments or stand beneath a thermal waterfall, to dine at one of the top ten restaurants in Italy (Da Caino, in Montemerano) or to explore La Maremma – the relatively undiscovered southwestern region that we lovingly call “The Other Tuscany” – you will find this to be a great home base you’ll want to hurry back to in time for that sunset aperitivo each evening.

Location: Just outside Montemerano, a teensy-weensy but very authentic medieval hill town that only the most adventurous travelers have heard of. Walk to Montemerano; 4 km from Saturnia, 40 km from the nearest train station, 150 km from Rome, 110 km from Fiumicino Airport, and 200 km from Florence. Click here to see a map.

Rooms: Only 7! All are modern, sunny and bright, with delicate pastel wall and ceiling paintings, custom-made country furniture, good lighting, desk and armchair. Superior rooms are on the first floor and have a covered balcony; standard rooms are on the ground floor and have a covered patio. All the rooms (except the single, which faces the olive grove and does not have a patio) have a French door and a window that overlook the garden and the nearby hills. Double beds are king-sized; a third bed can be added to any double room. Every room has a private bathroom with stall shower and double sinks. The junior suite has a sitting room with a queen bed or sofa, and an archway to a double bedroom.

Features: Air conditioning, window screens, direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, mini-bar, wall safe, luggage rack, hair dryer, magnifying mirror, oversize stall showers with rainforest heads, terrycloth towels.

Facilities: Tuscan restaurant (closed on Wednesdays), continental breakfast, room service, bar, free parking, free mountain bikes available.
