Only 15 minutes walk from the Duomo is a wonderful residential neighborhood filled with great eateries, food shops and boutiques. Although this city can often be referred to as Milan the Maligned, denigrated because it does not have the ubiquitous ancient ruins of Rome, or Renaissance palaces of Florence, or rococo extravagances of Venice, if you have the chance to spend two or three days here, and especially if you stay in a great location like this one, you might be surprised to find that Milan can be inviting as well as exciting. It boasts a world-class museum set in a delightful cobblestone district (Brera), a spectacular 16th-century fortress, the continent's second-tallest church (whose incredibly ornate upper regions can be visited easily by elevator), the most famous opera house in the world, and restaurants which many experts claim to be Italy's best. Toss in Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper for good measure and it turns out that just about the only thing Milan does NOT have is hordes of tourists. With many international flights now arriving and departing at Malpensa, we suggest that you too give Milan a chance. You are likely to come away pleasantly surprised. |
