Napoli Storico Hotel
This small, charming hotel occupies a 19th-century mansion that belonged to a wealthy and very eccentric Neapolitan nobleman. For centuries, his family had owned a vast monastery on this spot, and after it – as well as most of the country’s convents and monasteries – was shut down following the Neapolitan invasion and French take-over of the Papal States and southern Italy, it had slowly fallen into a sorrow state of disrepair. The Marquis changed all that by having marble floors put in throughout, by having monumental doors and windows installed, and by emblazoning it all with his aristocratic coat of arms. All these embellishments, and many more that have been added in the last 120 years, bear witness to the mansion’s illustrious past. Since 2003, it has been a gracious boutique hotel hidden inside a nondescript apartment compound and surrounded by its own lush garden with a relaxing swimming pool at its heart.
