Hotel Principe

We recently revisited one of the best-known 4-star hotels in Venice and were very pleasantly surprised. The location is literally two blocks from the train station, which means getting to it with your baggage is virtually effortless and costfree (two very rare commodities in Venice!). It also occupies a historical building, thus has lots more charm that the average 4-star hotel. About 30% of the rooms overlook a picturesque stretch of the Grand Canal.

Location: On Lista di Spagna, about 200 yards from the train station. The hotel occupies Palazzo Calbo-Crotta, a 15th-century Gothic building on the Grand Canal just next to the Ponte degli Scalzi. Although this neighborhood has a very "bad rap," it is extremely convenient, very safe and filled with economical eateries and shops.

Vaporetto: The Santa Lucia stop is 50 yards from the hotel.

Rooms: Singles, doubles, triples, and quads. Some of the canal-view rooms have nice private terraces. Rooms on the second floor have wooden casement ceilings. Quad rooms have two queen beds and face the canal. Some of the doubles also have a dressing room.

Features: Elevator; good air conditioning, mini-bar, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, double-glazed windows, wall safe. Bathrooms have tubs or showers, nice courtesy sets and hair driers.

Facilities: Lovely breakfast room; good American-style buffet breakfast; great bar on the canal; restaurant also on the canal.
