River Palace Hotel

There has been a hotel of this name at this wonderful downtown location for decades - but it was a place that In Italy Online would never have recommended: it was drab and forgettable! Today, anyone who wanders through the nondescript front door and sees this brand-new transformation, which took over four years and cost a king's ransom, would never in his wildest dreams believe it could have been anything but the exquisite showcase that it has become. Priceless woods, marbles and oil paintings in ancient frames, ornate moldings and hand-painted decorations - all give the impression of being, as the hotel's name states, a veritable palace. Lastly, as befits any royal abode, the kind and friendly staff have been trained to consider any wish their command, and they eagerly await the chance to prove that Rome is once again a fine place for anyone to call home, even if only for a few days.

Location: In Via Flaminia, about 150 yards from Piazza del Popolo. You can easily walk to the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. St. Peter's and the train station are quickly reached via subway, which stops at the Flaminia station just two blocks away. Several trams stop right in front of the hotel's door. Taxi fare from the station is 10 Euro. Click here to see a map.

59, including deluxe doubles (one king-size bed or two twin beds, bathroom with bathtub or stall shower), three junior suites (one king-size bed or two twin beds, a third bed or sofa, bathroom with bathtub or stall shower – some have two bathrooms) and one suite on the top floor (king-size bed, bathroom with whirlpool tub, very large private furnished terrace with awning).
