Sorrento Villa Garden Hotel

If you want to see the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Naples without undertaking what many consider the daunting feat of driving, we have one suggestion for you: stay in Sorrento! When you tally up the many advantages offered by this delightful town, it becomes quite clear why the British (rightly known as the world’s best travelers) have traditionally favored it over other local towns. For starters, you can get there by train or boat. From there you can then visit all the above sites by train or boat. The town itself is not just a tourist mecca but an actual Italian village with loads of colorful shops and markets. And perhaps best of all, this village is flat! No perpendicular hills with hundreds of hand-carved steps to negotiate every time you leave the hotel, which might just be this lovely 19th-century mansion, completely renovated and converted into a 4-star gleaming jewel. Book early: they have only 19 rooms in all!

Location: On a cliff along the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the quiet residential area of S. Agnello, with a superb view across the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Walk to the train station, shops and sites in Sorrento in 20-30 minutes. The docks are just slightly farther. Click here for a map.

Public transportation: A good location for staying on the Amalfi Coast without a car. There is a public bus that goes to Piazza Tasso in Sorrento (purchase your tickets at the hotel), or you can walk for 10 minutes to the Circumvesuviana commuter train, which links S. Agnello to Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum. The train also stops near the Sorrento docks, where you can get the hydrofoil to Naples, all points on the Amalfi Coast, and Capri.

Rooms:

19, including doubles, triples, junior suites, a family suite and one special romantic suite. Standard double rooms have garden or pool views. Superior double rooms have a balcony and partial sea view. Standard and superior rooms have bathrooms with bathtubs or massage showers. Junior suites are larger and have a single sleep sofa in the sitting area, plus full sea view, and a bathroom with triangular whirlpool bathtub; the Family Suite is on the ground floor and has a canopied queen bed, two single beds, and a balcony with partial sea view. The Ninfea Suite has a separate living room, a double bedroom with sea view and a bathroom with whirlpool bathtub. It is a very romantic solution, for two people only please!
