In 1952, a young man opened a coffee bar next to the spectacular mother church of Praiano, at the exact midpoint of the Amalfi Coast. Business boomed and the bar grew into a restaurant, then he added a few rooms upstairs. It never stopped being a family-run establishment, but eventually there were 40 rooms and a rooftop pool supported on 62 invisible cement pillars that are somewhat of a modern engineering marvel. Everyone thought the pool should go down in the garden, but the Mamma said No, you can see the whole famous coast from that rooftop, and that's where I want my pool. Today, you can have a delicious lunch as you gaze at the view, and although the town surrounds the complex, you will never hear the sounds of its residents or the traffic for which this coast is also (in)famous. Indeed, Praiano is a charming little town that does not have the Jet Set renown of its neighbors, which means it has been able to retain much of its authentic character, making it the ideal base for the discerning In Italy Online traveler. From the minute you arrive, you will be welcomed as a member of the family, who will do their utmost to ensure that you come away with wonderful memories, not the least of which will be the breathtaking views of Positano, the Isle of Capri, and the "golden sunsets" from which the hotel takes its name.

Location: In Praiano, only 20-100 meters from shops and restaurants. Click here for a map.

Public transportation: A good location for staying on the Amalfi Coast without a car. Public buses stop very near the hotel and run into the evening, and there is even a bus that comes direct from Rome every morning. From here, it is about a 20-minute bus ride to the dock in Positano where you can get the hydrofoil to Capri.

Rooms: 40, including singles, doubles, triples and quads. All have delicate custom-made Vietri majolica tiles on the floor, and typical local furnishings with good-quality linens and towels. We strongly recommend that you reserve a deluxe room, because these were all refurbished in 2003, are the largest and have a big terrace with sea view, as well as Vietri-tile lined bathrooms with magnifying mirror, soap dispensers, and some with whirlpool bathtub. Many superior rooms have also been refurbished; they are smaller and have sea view and balcony or terrace. Standard rooms are furnished like the others but do not have sea view. Triple and quad rooms have a double bed and a sleep sofa. One special Family Suite has two rooms - one double room with sea-view balcony, plus a smaller twin room with no sea view and a 2nd bathroom with stall shower (price on request). There are no connecting rooms.

Features: Air conditioning, heating, direct-dial telephone with modem access, satellite TV, mini bar, safe big enough for a small laptop, hair dryer.

Facilities: Elevator, swimming pool with children's section, shuttle service to La Praia beach (in summer months), restaurant with non-smoking section, state-of-the-art fitness room, tile-lined Turkish bath and sauna, room service, buffet breakfast on the terrace, 24-hour front desk, free on-site parking.
