We had a great time in Italy.
Merano Guest House was fabulous! Quaint, cozy and homey – and the views out our windows were amazing! The staff was especially helpful and friendly, readily accommodating our needs and helping us make decisions on activities and food options. The location just might be the best thing about the property. It is on the main promenade, meaning everything is just a short walk away. Internet access would have been appreciated. General impressions of Merano – a definite come back place. Great outdoor opportunities, a friendly town with a good atmosphere, plenty of do – although everything closes at 7 pm much to the chagrin of our kids! The scenery is beyond description. Our only disappointment was the food. We were in Italy, yet there was no Italian food! German food all over the place, but no good Italian food! That said, the German food was great! I will definitely recommend Merano Guest House and Merano to the many traveling friends we have here in Saudi Arabia.
We took trains which made the travel time longer than expected. I wish someone would have told us the “rules” of Italian trains – little things like when you need seat reservations and when you don’t, where you can sit without reservations, how to read the time tables! We purchased a 7-day rail pass and used just three days of it, which was sort of a bummer, but having it was nice.
Our greatest headache was transportation to and from airports. Yikes! We flew into Milan and out of Bergamo, leaving some excess baggage in the airport in Milan. Not a good idea as there is no direct transportation between the two locations. Upon arriving, we took the more expensive train from the Milan airport to Milan, only to find that it doesn’t connect with the central train station but rather a different one which meant hauling luggage on the subway more than needed. Next trip we took the bus which was not only much cheaper but also set us off at the central station. Giving folks a heads-up on that would be good!
Overall – Italy will definitely be back on our travel schedule in the near future! Thanks for your help.
