About 300 yards from a delightful little cove on the warm southeastern coast of Sicily, less than 15 minutes drive from the center of Siracusa, lies a 27-acre farm shaded by ancient olives and young pomegranates, palms and bougainvilleas. Although it is technically in the city suburbs, the total silence and bracing sea air make it seem a thousand miles from nowhere, and its peaceful inner courtyard provides a haven from the stress of a day's sightseeing. Your hosts in this oasis are Pepe and Renata, a handsome couple who, despite the fact that they have grown children, still manage to treat each other as affectionately as newlyweds. Renata is a master pottery artist, and herein lies the truly unique nature of this lovely property, which might more aptly be named "Ceramiche Siciliane." Everywhere you look here you will see the colorful results of her labors. Kitchen and bathroom sinks are decorated with the fruits, flowers and fishes after which each apartment is named. Open the cabinets and you'll find a complete set of dishes that matches the sinks. Tiles set into the terracotta floors also echo the same theme. And one apartment, Stella di Mare, even has a very special effect that we'll let you discover for yourselves!

There are seven apartments, all clustered around the central courtyard onto which they open. Each apartment also has its own patio area shaded by a pergola, and inside you'll find air conditioning, a small but ultra-modern kitchen with mini-fridge and stovetop, and a small but exquisite bathroom with stall shower and terrycloth towels. Bedrooms have large wardrobes. Melograno, Nonna Lina and Stella di Mare each have one bedroom with queen canopy bed. Olive also has a single sofa bed in the kitchen/living room; while Ostrica, Limoni and Asino each have a double bedroom and two single sofa beds in the kitchen/living room. Ostrica has an oven and full fridge in the kitchen; Asino is wheelchair-accessible.

There is also a smaller house, Al Mare, which sits about halfway down the path to the beach. It has a covered patio and can be rented as one unit that’s great for a family, or as two separate apartments. Mare 1 has an eat-in kitchen, a twin bedroom, master bedroom with queen bed, and a bathroom with shower; Mare 2 has a kitchen with full fridge and oven, queen bedroom, bathroom with shower, and its own porch. When the door between them is open, the house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two sitting rooms and two kitchens, for a maximum of seven people.

The beach, half-hidden behind a stand of pine trees, is not a sandy one. It has large flat rocks that are perfect for sunbathing, where Pepe sets up umbrellas in the summer. Snorkeling from here is first-rate. If you prefer sand, you can drive 3 km to the best seaside in the area, where you'll find free public beaches or private establishments that rent chairs and umbrellas, and offer meals and snacks. Very easy day trips include (of course) Ortigia Island in Siracusa, Noto, Ragusa, and Piazza Armerina. Even Taormina is just over an hour away.
