This perfectly manicured and immaculate country house sits on land that once belonged to Lisa di Gioconda - better known to the world as Mona Lisa. The house, built in the 1600s, is 2 km from Olena, in the very heart of the Chianti. It offers stunning picture postcard views of the valleys, the forests, the vineyards, the olive groves and the old farmhouses that populate our visions and dreams of Tuscan wine country. Next door is the lovely old manor house where your hosts sometimes stay, and where a friendly custodian resides all year round. The setting is totally peaceful and secluded, yet only 2.5 km from the San Donato exit of the Siena-Florence superstrada. Both cities are less than half an hour away.
The property itself is an understated masterpiece of terraced lawns, dry stonewalls, olive trees, flowering roses and perfumed lavender. You can drive right up to the door, where a big teak table for 8 sits under a pergola. The house is compact and cleverly divided into two apartments that can be rented by one group or, because they face in opposite directions and occupy different wings of the house, it can assure good privacy for two separate groups. Both apartments have terracotta floors, wood-beamed ceilings, and satellite TV.
Apartment One (915 sq. ft.), upstairs, has a living room with a fireplace and double sleep sofa, a dining room with table for 4 (or 8), and a kitchen with full fridge, oven and cooktop. At the end of the hall is a pretty bedroom with a wrought-iron queen bed, a big wardrobe and the characteristic cross-hatched windows of a former barn. The other bedroom is the same but with twin beds that can be joined to form a king-size bed. Off the hall is the bathroom, with a good stall shower and window overlooking the valley.
Apartment Two (750 sq. ft.) is on the other side of the building, facing the beautiful private swimming pool (18 x 25 feet) and the valley. It has its own table and chairs beneath a large umbrella on its private lawn. The living/dining room features a double sleep sofa and table for 4, and the galley-style kitchen has a full fridge, oven and cooktop. At the end of the hall are a twin/king bedroom with wardrobe, a queen bedroom with wardrobe, and a big hall bathroom with a good stall shower.
Unlike many locations in the Chianti, this one is excellent for day trips, because it is close to the superstrada yet affords easy access to Radda and Castellina. The nearby roads, with their unforgettable vistas from bygone years, lead to countless small villages and hamlets. And there's no need to rush home either, because the beautiful garden lighting makes it possible to enjoy a barbecued dinner topped off with a late-night swim under the myriad Chianti stars.
