The friendly English-speaking family who were brave enough to purchase this quintessential Tuscan farmhouse when it was little more than a roofless huddle invested untold amounts of energy and money restoring it to its original beauty. They will be happy to tell you about the process, and about all the wonderful places you can visit while you use it as your country retreat. In the afternoons after you return from your explorations, you can sit in the well-tended garden with an apertif, or take a dip in the tree-shaded swimming pool or just gaze out at the unforgettable Tuscan views, and later curl up in front of the fireplace and reminisce about the medieval villages, generous vineyards, sprawling monasteries, colorful markets and delectable food shops you've seen. Don't forget to have a look at the starry sky and wish each other Sogni d'oro (sweet dreams!) before you descend the stairs to bed.

This quiet, peaceful property was once a working farm; at its center is a sprawling group of stone houses where the peasants lived with their livestock. Your hosts have made the former barn into a single-family villa, while another house has two apartments in one of which they live year-round. The 2000-square-foot former barn, offering three bedrooms and 3.5 baths, is perfect for a family of seven. From the large open terrace, with its spectacular views, working barbecue and shaded outdoor dining area, you enter the country kitchen, which features a pantry stocked with all the dishes, cookware and accessories you’ll need to make your own Tuscan dinners. In the same room are a wood pizza oven, oven, range, full fridge/freezer and dishwasher. Through the original brick arch is the dining area, followed by the spacious living room furnished with sofas and a satellite TV. Completing this level is a half-bath. Down a short flight of stairs is the lower level (NOT the basement), which has heated floors for colder months. A long hall leads to two double bedrooms and one triple bedroom, each with its own door onto the rear garden. At one end is the master bedroom, featuring a queen bed, big wardrobe and en suite bathroom with marble tub; off the hall is the second bathroom with a big stall shower and washing machine; followed by a bedroom with king bed or twin beds and a big wardrobe; the third bedroom is at the other end with a queen bed and daybed and en suite bathroom with stall shower. Also at this end of the house is a lounge room that has a sink and burners and opens onto a second patio.

Next door is the second house, where the owners live upstairs. On the ground floor is a 900-square-foot apartment for 2+2. Like the other house, it has the original wood-beam ceilings and brick arches. But whereas the house has wooden floors, here they are lined with terracotta tiles. The living room has a fireplace, two single sofa beds, a dining area and a satellite TV, as well as a kitchenette with fridge, microwave, range and dishwasher. Completing the dwelling are a double bedroom that opens onto the garden, and a bathroom with stall shower.
