How would you like to live in the very heart of ancient Roman history? No, we're not proposing you erect a tent in the Coliseum! Consider instead this beautiful new apartment, which occupies the second floor above streets where Caesar himself would have walked every day. He'd have been on his way from the nearby Senate to the equally nearby Theatre of Marcellus, affectionately known among Romans as the “Little Coliseum.” It was Caesar who originally commissioned this graceful round theatre in 44 BC, to rival the one built by his arch-enemy Pompey, whom he had just killed in battle. Ironically, it would be right there in Pompey’s Theatre, only about a five-minute walk from our building, that Caesar would be assassinated in less than six months. The Little Coliseum, which is actually much more beautiful than its colossal cohort, sits about 400 yards from our building, at the far end of what was once Rome’s walled Jewish ghetto. Just behind the theatre is the tiny church where Jews were forced to attend Mass every Sunday or face severe penalties. Right past that is the city’s oldest standing bridge, beyond which is the very authentic part of Trastevere. It would be hard to cram more history into one tiny neighborhood – and what’s even better is that our building is on a quiet street almost unused by cars, while all the city’s most famous sites are within easy walking distance (not to mention countless restaurants, bars, enoteche, and gourmet food shops, as well as half a dozen bus stops).
The sunny, spacious apartment that sits in the midst of all this history has just been renovated from top to bottom, and fitted with ultra-modern appliances as well as comfy new furniture. It is two flights up from the street, but the relative peace and quiet will handsomely repay you for this small effort. You'll step into the very large living room, which features a double sofa bed and a kitchenette with full fridge, burners, toaster oven and dishwasher. A dining table folds out for your meals; the accompanying folding chairs can be kept in the large walk-in closet.
Off the living room is the large bedroom, which has a big window and a king-size bed. There is also a gorgeous modern bathroom with an oversize sink, state-of-the-art massage shower, and washing machine. The entire apartment is heated and boasts stunning parquet floors, as well as high-speed Internet and telephone. Although it can easily sleep up to four people, we think this casa romana is the ideal hideaway for a couple who wish to combine history, convenience and romance!
