Tuscan Winery Retreat
Authentic Italy - Best-Value Lodgings - For Wine Lovers - Green Vacation - Family Lodgings
To reach this farming hamlet, first drive to the exact center of Tuscany. Turn down a certain country road and continue on, past row after row of vineyards. Drive two hundred yards farther, along a narrow gravel road lined with densely planted cypress trees. Stop when you get to the cluster of medieval buildings nestled beneath a canopy of umbrella pines and ancient olive trees. This is your Tuscan Winery Retreat, whose flowering patios and broad shady lawns make it a top-notch choice for the hotter months.
There is a wide range of accommodations here, all with terra cotta floors, wood-beamed ceilings, whitewashed walls and in some, the original stone sinks. Naturally, the bathroom and kitchen fixtures are all modern. Furnishings are simple and comfortable, and all the apartments have direct-dial telephones. There is a laundry where guests can use the washing machines free of charge.
Loggiatino 1 and 2 are on the first floor. Each has a double bedroom with nice en suite bathroom, living/dining room with double sleep sofa and kitchen with TV. They can be rented separately or joined to form one larger apartment, in which case they share the ante-room, which has a fireplace. Belvedere is also on the first floor, with two double bedrooms, bathroom, living/dining room with kitchenette and a private balcony for al fresco dining.
Gli Olivi and Pergola are on the ground floor of the guest house, near the swimming pool. Each apartment has two bedrooms with double beds, a living/dining room with double sleep sofa and kitchenette, bathroom and lovely private garden surrounded by rose bushes. Occasionally it is also possible to stay in Il Caminetto, a cozy apartment with dining room, kitchen with fireplace, double bedroom, big bathroom with shower, and private balcony overlooking the swimming pool. The well-kept grounds include a Finnish-style swimming pool, plenty of portable barbecues for the guests' use, and several lounging areas. Once in your car, it will take you no more than 15 minutes to get to San Gimignano. Siena and Florence are only a few minutes farther, and such lesser-known treasures as Volterra, Monteriggioni, and Castellina in Chianti are just down the road. Almost anywhere in Tuscany makes an easy day trip, and when you get home you can relax with a glass of the farm's rosso, one of the smoothest unlabeled wines in creation.
