Character: Four Tuscan farmhouses with a total of six apartments, on a small gated estate with wonderful landscaping.
Advantages: Great views, safety for small children, English-speaking person on the property two hours daily.
Location: 3 km from Montaione, about 15 minutes' drive from San Gimignano. Great if you want to visit coastal areas, Florence and Siena. Click here to see a map.
Size: Two of the houses have only one apartment each, with two or three bedrooms, a separate kitchen, two bathrooms and ample outdoor garden and patio. The third house has one two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. The last farmhouse is very large and has three apartments: one has one bedroom and one bath, one has two bedrooms and one bath, and the third has three bedrooms and two baths.
Features: All apartments have fireplace, window screens, dishwasher, telephone, satellite TV, Internet access and Internet point, and hair dryer. Furnishings are a combination of antiques and rattan. Shared washing machine, swimming pool, tennis courts and a wonderful vegetable garden and orchard you are welcome to "raid."
Minimum stay: Saturday-to-Saturday.
Disadvantages: May be slightly farther west than some people desire (it's not ideal for visiting the Montalcino-Montepulciano-Cortona area).

Just outside Montaione, in the heart of picturesque Val D'Elsa, right in the middle of Tuscany and a handful of miles from San Gimignano, this small property was totally remodelled in 1998. Its magnificent landscaping is a treat to the eye, combining impeccable lawns, colorful waves of flowering bushes, dark green cypress trees and a fantastic fruit and vegetable garden that is the pride and joy of your host Roberto's father. Almost any week of the year there's fresh produce ripening on the limbs and vines, and you are always welcome to pick whatever you'd like. Shaded by the pine, oak and fruit trees is a wonderful in-ground swimming pool (7 X 14 meters) and another for children (7 X 2.5 meters) for your enjoyment from May to October. Nearby is the private tennis court.

Podere di Montaione has only six apartments, which occupy four ancient brick farm buildings. Each has terracotta floors, brick-arch or wood-beam ceilings and lots of windows with screens, as well as dishwasher, satellite television, Internet access and direct-dial telephone. Leonardo (860 sq. ft. on two floors) occupies the building nearest the estate's gated entry. Downstairs there's a large living room with fireplace, double sleep sofa and dining table, a separate kitchen, a bedroom with two twin beds and en suite bathroom with shower (also accessible from the living room). Upstairs is a double bedroom and en suite bathroom with tub.

Brunelleschi (970 sq. ft. on two floors) also occupies a single house. Downstairs is a spacious living room with fireplace, double sleep sofa, dining table and kitchenette, plus a twin bedroom and bathroom with shower (all have brick arch ceilings); upstairs there are a double bedroom and another twin bedroom, which share the second bathroom.

The third house is occupied by Raffaello (755 sq.ft). It is on the ground floor and has a spacious living/dining room with fireplace and kitchenette, a bedroom with queen bed, a bedroom with twin beds, and two bathrooms with shower. The property owner's family have another apartment in this building.

The main house at Podere di Montaione is cleverly divided into three apartments which preserve lots of privacy and silence. Giotto (485 sq. ft. on the ground floor) has a living room with double sleep sofa, fireplace and dining table, separate eat-in kitchen, a double bedroom overlooking the apartment's private garden, and a bathroom that is wheelchair-accessible. Outside is the apartment's private patio.

Next door is Donatello (750 sq. ft.), which has a spacious living room with double sleep sofa and fireplace, a huge eat-in kitchen and small private patio, a twin bedroom, a double bedroom and a bathroom with shower. The covered external staircase leads up to Botticelli (860 sq. ft.), which is actually laid out on three split-levels. There's a very large living room with fireplace, sleep sofa, dining table and kitchenette. On one side is a double bedroom and en suite bathroom with stall shower; on the other side are two twin bedrooms which share another bathroom with shower.
