Finally, here it is: a unique place to stay on the road from Florence to Bologna. This classic Renaissance villa, built in the early 13th century for the Roti Michelozzi family, is truly a historic residence par excellance. With "glorious understatement," it crowns a beautifully manicured hilltop just 25 miles north of Florence, in the haunting Mugello Valley that has managed to keep itself well off the beaten track of mass tourism. From the 1200s through the end of the 17th century, it was here that aristocrats and wealthy merchants chose to build their palatial country estates, partly because the cool air offered such welcome relief from the city's oppressive heat. Today you can spend a pleasant day driving from villa to villa tasting the superb Chianti Rufina wines produced in the cellars of the Mugello.
Forming its own tiny hamlet, Villa Campestri sits almost 1500 feet above sea level. The estate extends over 350 acres of olive groves, rolling meadows and chestnut forests, all crisscrossed with paths for relaxing strolls through the countryside. Many of the foods which grow wild and cultivated on these grounds - mushrooms, figs, cherries, olives, apples, chestnuts and more - find their way to the villa restaurant, where you will also be offered fine Chianti Rufina vintages.
There is history in every nook and cranny of the villa, from the ornate chandeliers to framed antique paintings and gold-leafed mirrors. Yet despite the illustrious pedigree of the place, there is no pretension. The staff are friendly and attentive, and pride themselves on welcoming you as if to their home. Whether you're relaxing beneath the massive wood-beams of the sitting room or admiring the mountains from the panoramic swimming pool, you are likely to ask yourself if perhaps you lived here in some former life.
Guest rooms at the villa are regal and spacious. Each has a minibar, satellite television, direct-dial telephone, and independent heating, as well as a private bathroom lined in gleaming majolica tiles and equipped with hair dryer and shower or tub. Every room is totally unique, but all are furnished with original antiques. Families will be thrilled to learn that each of the six suites comfortably sleeps four people (in a double bedroom plus separate living room with two single sleep sofas). There is also a three-bedroom, one-bathroom, suite for 5 or 6 people.
Discerning travelers have long known that the Mugello Valley is much more than just a spectacular region to be traversed on the way to Bologna. There's loads to do here, such as taking a picturesque horseback ride over the hills (a stables is less than two miles away), or playing 18 holes of golf at one of Italy's loveliest courses (7 miles away). Grand Prix lovers can visit the nearby Mugello Ferrari Circuit, while art lovers can poke around in the wonderful ceramics shops of Borgo San Lorenzo. If you do want to visit the cities, Florence and Bologna are each less than an hour away, and Siena is only slightly farther.
