There is an area directly between Rome and Tuscany called La Tuscia. Characterized by gently rolling hills, distant blue-grey mountains, sparkling lakes, incredibly ancient Etruscan ruins and minuscule forgotten hill towns, it instantly wins the heart of everyone who visits. Best of all, this region is almost entirely unknown to mass tourism. Never will you see platoons of tour buses parked along the roadside or entire town streets lined with souvenir shops selling ugly trinkets at ridiculous prices. What you will see in Tuscia are gracious farmhouses surrounded by brilliant green fields, grazing sheep and sweet local residents who take the greatest pride in showing you their homeland.
La Tuscia offers endless possibilities for fascinating day trips. Perhaps the closest is Sutri, one of the most enchanting Etruscan ruins. Also very nearby is glorious Viterbo, one of the loveliest towns in Italy: because it was long a favorite country home for the Popes, it harbors numerous marvelous churches and papal palaces within its picturesque medieval walls. Still under an hour's drive are other renowned Etruscan sites: Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Vulci come to mind. Garden lovers will not want to miss the extravagant estates at Bomarzo, Bagnaia and Caprarola; and for fans of beautiful nature there are Lakes Bolsena and Vico, the pristine beaches of Latium and the nature parks of Lamone and Rureno. And that's not all. You can simply use Casa La Tuscia as a base for your visits to Rome: it's only 45 km. away, reached in under an hour by convenient train service which stops only ten minutes from this historic estate just outside Capranica. Between the two lakes and just off the Via Cassia (a road originally built by the Roman legions), it is a five-acre estate where olive groves, chestnut forests, orchards, sweetly-smelling herbs and ancient Etruscan relics surround a large stone farmhouse, two cottages and a tree-shaded swimming pool. You'll enjoy stunning views across the valley from the outdoor patio where breakfast is served in warmer months. Inside there is a large kitchen where the original marble sink sits alongside state-of-the-art modern appliances and a big dining table, beneath the original wooden ceilings.
Your host Giuseppe, who speaks good English after a lifetime spent living abroad in his country's diplomatic service, has furnished his country home with exquisite taste. Heavy wooden antique dressers, armoires and tables are complemented by wrought-iron beds covered with handmade quilts. Fresh flowers and antique prints are everywhere, in the guestrooms and in the comfortable sitting room where you can follow world news on satellite TV, check your laptop via wireless access, read or chat in front of the fireplace.
Casa La Tuscia is cozy and inviting, with two guestrooms, three apartments and two cottages. Each of the two double rooms has two twin beds or one king-sized bed, plus a private bathroom with shower. Either of these rooms can have a third bed for a child, and both have a mini-fridge where you can store snacks and drinks. As the need arises, they are incorporated into the three apartments, of which there are two with two bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with bathtub and one with shower), living room with TV and kitchenette (mini-fridge, burners, dishwasher and sink); and one with living room with fireplace and kitchenette, one bedroom and one bathroom. Each of the apartments has a private garden.
Close to the main house are the two cottages. Each has a living/dining room with two sofas, furnished kitchenette (mini-fridge, oven, burners, and sink) and private garden. One cottage, Lara, measures 860 sq. ft. and has one queen bedroom, one twin bedroom, a bathroom with shower and a bathroom with tub. The other cottage, Cristina, measures 740 sq.ft. and has one queen bedroom, one twin bedroom, and one bathroom with bathtub. A fifth bed can be added free of charge to either of these cottages.
Throughout the property, the many windows are double-glazed and the heating is excellent. Completing this tranquil vacation retreat are an 18 X 36-foot swimming pool (open June 15-September 15), a laundry room with washing machine and iron, a barbecue, a children's playground, and a well-equipped fitness center.
