Florentine Country Castle

Ever since the year 964, this stalwart stone castle has perched atop a panoramic hilltop about 400 feet above sea level, surrounded by its own 20-acre estate of vineyards, cypress stands, pine groves and oak forests. Of course it was first built as a military watchtower, whose troops were meant to protect the commercial traffic between Florence and Pisa, which was heavy even way back then. Like all self-respecting castles, it afforded endless views – in this case, of the northern hills of the Chianti which were so hotly and cruelly contested between Siena and Florence for so many centuries. Eventually, in the 1500s, the estate became the property of a noble family who hired one of the best local architects to design the graceful Renaissance villa that now enfolds the original structure. Along the way, the complex acquired one of the most astonishing painted coffered ceilings in Italy, which you will see when the owners take you on a guided tour of the original frescoes, objects d’art and furnishings in the numerous monumental salons on the ground floor.

Upstairs on the first floor (32 steps up from the ground level) is a large breakfast room where the dozen guests enjoy an Italian breakfast, as well as several common rooms, a panoramic loggia, and five guestrooms. Each of the latter is spacious, with ancient terracotta floors, coved and arched ceilings, and large windows that open onto the classic Tuscan views. All furnishings are authentic antiques and, in keeping with local custom, there are no superfluous knick knacks. Just a massive wardrobe and chest of drawers for your clothes, a four-poster bed, a pair of nightstands and two or three chairs. This, friends, is TRUE Tuscan style – for as far back as anyone can remember, the average Tuscan has always been an industrious, no-frills kind of person. Of course, modern Tuscans like a good bathroom whenever possible, so each room has one of those, with a stall shower or bathtub. Room III has a queen bed (no twin beds possible), two large windows, a bathroom with big shower and great views from the window. Room IV is a suite with a living room, a separate bedroom with queen bed (no twin beds possible) and a daybed, plus a big bathroom with shower. Room V can have a queen bed or two twin beds, plus it has a dressing room and bathroom with tub and wall shower. The Family Suite has a foyer off which are a bathroom with whirlpool bathtub and separate stall shower, one bedroom with queen or twin beds and another bedroom with queen bed (no twin beds possible). This last room, as well as III and IV, are all on corners of the villa with views on both sides. You can stay at this property as few as two nights, but if you are looking for a unique historical experience, we recommend you stay longer, because it is quite easy to visit almost all Tuscany from here, and if you have some time left over for a walk through the woods or a quiet afternoon on the loggia, we’ll bet you’ll never forget it!
