Gaeta is a small harbor town that occupies a promontory overlooking one of the most spectacular bays on Italy's western coast, only 80 miles south of Rome's Fiumicino Airport. This is where we find some of the purest waters in Italy, whose tides have created a series of fine, sandy beaches that have thrilled visitors all the way back to the Roman Emperors. Inland is a picturesque range of gently sloping hills covered with a blanket of low flowering shrubs and pungent herbs known as macchia mediterranea. The town itself is small enough to stroll across in half an hour, from the ancient village of fishermen and peasants (today a thriving warren of interesting little shops) to the medieval quarter, with its winding lanes, hidden cloisters and many churches. Dominating it all is the castle (13th to 16th centuries), from whose ramparts the locals have defended their turf from virtually every marauding invader Italy has ever known.
Right at the entrance to the town is this brand-new hotel, created in 1999 when one of the town's most beautiful ancient palaces was totally renovated. The position makes it possible for almost all the twenty-nine rooms to have the same spectacular harbor view that guests can enjoy from the sun roof and the outdoor bar.
The accommodations here all have pretty upholstery fabrics, great linens, satellite TV, air conditioning and direct-dial telephone. Some of the junior suites and suites have private terraces. Each of the junior suites has a double bed, two single sleep sofas, kitchenette and bathroom with shower. The suites have a separate bedroom and living room with double sleep sofa and kitchenette. There is an elevator, pizzeria, bar and restaurant, as well as an Internet point in the lobby, a laundry service and special discounts at nearby beach establishments and tennis courts.
Gaeta makes a perfect base for forays into the South. Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii can each constitute a fascinating - and easy - day trip. Just above the town is Mt. Orlando, site of unforgettable views across the bay to Naples, as well as what is considered the finest ancient Roman mausoleum in Italy. A much-restored ancient sanctuary occupies another summit on the western side of the promontory. It is reached through a narrow fissure in Split Mountain which, locals tell us, exists since an earthquake hit this region in the very moment that Jesus Christ died on the Cross. From this breathtaking vantage point you can admire the crystalline waters in the Marine Nature Park below. Just up the coast are Sperlonga, a tiny fishing village with steep whitewashed lanes reminiscent of the Greek islands, Terracina, site of several important ancient Roman ruins, and Circeo, one of the few coastal national parks in Europe.
