Although Parma and Modena are more famous, we have always found Reggio Emilia to be a much nicer place to stay. A perfect example of the provincial Italian town, it offers a dozen hopelessly theatrical piazze that host colorful outdoor markets several times a week; a warren of pedestrian-only streets lined with ochre and burnt sienna homes, fantastic fashion boutiques and enticing food shops; and a clutch of churches that range from the spectacular to the serene. And as so often happens in off-the-beaten-track Italy, the residents are friendly and courteous, happy to welcome curious outsiders. Click here for a Photo Album of Reggio Emilia. Right at the epicenter of this town, which was originally settled by the Roman legions, Hotel Posta occupies a National Registry building dating from the 13th century. For In Italy Online guests, the hotel staff is happy to arrange for a visit to a parmesan cheese factory, or to the owner's farm, where you can see their picturesque balsamic vinegar distillery and enjoy a tasting. We suggest you settle in for three or four nights so that you can experience the region's other delights, including the many different food museums, the Ferrari Gallery in Maranello, the home and theatre of Giuseppe Verdi, the fortified city of Ferrara, the red-roofed splendor of Bologna, and even the Byzantine churches of Ravenna. The staff will help you organize all of these day trips, and when you return in the late afternoon, you can enjoy an aperitif in the ornate cocktail bar before heading out for a scrumptious dinner followed by sweet dreams in your beautifully decorated room.
