Casa Levanto

Gleaming like an ochre jewel in the deep green mantle of the Ligurian hills, this 38-acre farm is surrounded by its own olive groves, cypress stands and hardwood forests. It is totally isolated, centuries away from our modern world, perched at the end of a steep but blessedly short mountain road. Accommodations are in B&B rooms or suites or four apartments in the owner’s villa, the family chapel, and the farmhouse (about 100 yards further up the road). Until the spring of 1999, the old stone farmhouse was little more than a heap of rubble with a great address. Then your host Giancarlo pushed back his sleeves and set to work, first entirely restoring the building to the strictest of codes, later decorating the rooms in the prettiest style imaginable. He scrubbed the original flagstone floors, polished the wood-beamed ceilings, painted the walls a soothing shade of blue, and purchased wrought-iron bedsteads, excellent mattresses and charming accessories such as gilded wall sconces. He repeated the same treatment on the 18th-century villa complex in 2001, and again on the apartments in 2004.

Casa Levanto is small, with only three double rooms, four junior suites, two suites and four apartments. One junior suite in the farmhouse has a double bed, a day bed and a small kitchen (mini-fridge, two burners and a sink). The suites are in the main villa and have a living room with single sofa bed, kitchenette, separate double bedroom and bathroom with shower. Although great care has been taken to maintain the rustic style, each room or suite has its own telephone, wall safe, mini-fridge and satellite TV, as well as a state-of-the-art private bathroom with shower and hair dryer. The farmhouse has a room where an organic breakfast is served in winter; it also offers a comfortable sofa. In warmer months, breakfast is served on the patio at either house.

Two of the apartments are in the main villa complex. One (545 sq. ft.) is on the ground floor, with its own garden and private panoramic terrace. It has a very large living/dining room/kitchenette with one double or two single sleep sofas and large fireplace, plus a room with two single beds or one queen bed, and bathroom with shower. In the guesthouse next to the chapel, Two (545 sq. ft.) is a duplex with a living/dining room and kitchenette on the ground floor; and on the second floor a double bedroom, a second bedroom that can have a single bed or a bunk bed, and a bathroom with shower (access to the bathroom is through the double bedroom). It also has its own garden. Both the apartments have a washing machine, satellite TV and telephone, plus tables, chairs and umbrellas in the garden.

The other two apartments are in a separate house about 100 yards from the complex. Three (545 sq.ft.) has a large living/dining room/kitchenette with one double or two single sleep sofas and fireplace, plus a room with a queen bed, and bathroom with shower. Four (860 sq. ft.) has a large living/dining room/kitchenette with fireplace, plus a room with two single beds or one queen bed, a room with one queen bed, a room with bunk beds, and a bathroom with shower. Both the apartments have air conditioning, a washing machine, satellite TV and telephone, plus tables, chairs and umbrellas in the garden.

Just 1.5 km down the hill is Levanto, a quaint little town with good restaurants. A nice little beach is 5 minutes' drive or 30 minutes' walk, and plentiful trains and boats can take you anywhere on the Ligurian coast. Be sure to ask your host about trails in the vicinity: there are miles and miles of well-marked ones winding through lemon groves, miniature vineyards and dense forests, and we bet you'll agree that half a day spent in this type of pursuit is as memorable as three hours in any big city museum!
