Medieval Monastery of Arezzo

There are certain days when the whole region of Tuscany is cloaked in a vast white mantle of fog, as if some imposing cloud had decided that it, too, wanted to settle down for a vacation in this beautiful land. On those days you will throw open your windows to see…nothing! and it will seem as if the whole world must be shrouded in the mists. But if you were to be staying in one magical spot south of Florence, about twenty minutes from the autostrada, you would find a narrow road winding its way skyward through a silent chestnut forest, and soon you would emerge into the most heavenly sunshine. This spot is only 4 km from Arezzo, a hilltown and an art city of unparalleled beauty. Lining the picturesque road are ageold villages, modest stone houses, manicured vineyards, silvery olive groves and rolling hills. Perhaps because of its beautiful panoramas and peaceful tranquility, combined with its relative proximity to Florence, this area was especially popular with the monastic orders of the Middle Ages, who needed inspiring retreats where their brothers and sisters could withdraw from worldly things, but who also had to make sure the abbot or mother superior could participate in ecclesiastic politics in the capital. At the very heart of this ancient territory, high on a hill with perhaps the best views of all, sits an ancient castle fortress that was once a monastery and is now a delightful country inn. Except for the beautiful swimming pool, this property has remained virtually unchanged for four centuries. Never in your wildest dreams would you imagine the nearest highway exit is only minutes away from this timeless paradise.

Inside the ancient stone building, the 19 comfortable rooms are all different from each other, while maintaining the original atmosphere thanks to their wood-beamed ceilings, antique furniture and hand-hewn stone walls. Each room has a private bathroom with stall shower and hair dryer, as well as satellite TV, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone with free wireless Internet connection, mini bar and safe. There are two connecting classic double rooms on the ground floor. All the other rooms are on the first and second floors, each of which is 18 steps up. Superior double rooms can have one or two extra beds for children. In 2008 there will be two junior suites on each floor; these have a large sitting area with a couch. Downstairs is the cosy restaurant, where classic Tuscan specialties and wines are served by the ancient fireplace. In summertime, the restaurant moves out to the courtyard, where the ancient loggia offers amazing views of the surrounding valley.

From this hilltop your eyes can roam from Arezzo to Florence to the snow-capped mountains of the Abetone on the northern horizon, and it's all laid out at your feet as though you were some noble eagle soaring freely on the wind. Perhaps that's why movie star Russell Crowe has a home nearby! Must-see spots in the vicinity are Arezzo (with its exquisite fresco cycle by Piero della Francesca - be sure to reserve in advance as these are some of the most famous Renaissance paintings in existence!), Cortona, Sansepolcro, Città di Castello, Gubbio, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno. Siena, Assisi, San Gimignano and Florence are only slightly farther away. After your excursion, enjoy a relaxing dip in the swimming pool, followed by aperitifs on the veranda, and dinner in the romantic restaurant, which serves classic Tuscan dishes accompanied by wine from the cellars of the former monastery.
