Every Italian coastal city has a beach, but few are as nice as Palermo's Mondello. A gleaming crescent of sand at the foot of Mount Pellegrino, it is close to the city center and yet basks in the rarified atmosphere of the Italian Beach Town, a unique combination of laidback residential streets, lively restaurants and nightspots, balmy salt air, sweet-smelling scrub pines and beautiful bronze bodies. Until you've experienced it for yourself it's almost impossible to imagine how much fun it can be to go to the beach in Italy, and how utterly different it is from going swimming in the States. Mondello, with its whitewashed houses and deep-blue waters, offers a great opportunity to find out what it's all about. And perhaps the best part is that downtown Palermo is just a 20-minute bus ride away.

A series of steps lead down from this tiny oasis, to the beach, the shopping district or the bus stop. At the top of the steps is a lush garden brimming with bougainvillea, wysteria, orange and lemon trees, climbing roses and colorful flowers. Home to myriad songbirds, it is surrounded by walls that insure privacy and silence. Once upon a time the whole hillside belonged to this lovely old country home, which has long been in the family of Silvana, your extremely hospitable hostess. In the sunny dining room where you have breakfast in the cooler months, you'll see many of her family heirlooms. But on warm days - which can occur in any month of the year in Sicily - you'll enjoy your fresh orange juice, organic homegrown eggs, pastries and homemade jams on the broad terrace that overlooks the mountains and the sea.

Silvana offers her guests two very different kinds of accommodation. One is the B&B, which consists of a spacious suite and a double room on the floor below her own. The suite offers a small sitting room, a double bedroom, and a bathroom with tub. French doors in the bedroom lead to a totally private balcony shaded by an ancient wysteria vine, where you can enjoy your breakfast. Next door is the double room, with a queen bed and private bathroom just across the hall. Breakfast can be taken in the dining room or on the vast upper terrace that is shared with Silvana's family.

On the lowest level of the house is an independent apartment, featuring an entryway with double futon, a large living room with couches and television, a kitchenette with full refrigerator, cooktop, toaster and coffeemaker, a double bedroom, and a bathroom with shower. Off the bedroom is a private garden, with table and chairs for four. If you have the luxury of setting aside several days here, your reward will be a total immersion in the lifestyle of Palermo, including all the wonders of its ancient city, the delights of its beach resort, and the fascinating sites within an hour's drive - such as Monreale, Cefalu and Segesta.
