Taormina has been an exclusive vacation retreat since the ancient Greeks built their spectacular theatre here in the 3rd century BC, so the locals have been in the hospitality business for a very long time! There is a nonchalant warmth in the way they welcome you that bespeaks a genetic predisposition towards making sure that strangers enjoy their stay in the area. Once you have conquered the very steep and windy road that you must navigate to reach this hilltop aerie, you will find that everyone is friendly yet discreet, cheerful yet respectful. The atmosphere is just plain pleasant – and why shouldn’t it be! These people live in paradise on earth, with the magnificent snowy peak of Mt. Etna on the one side, the silvery gleam of the Straits of Messina on the other side, and the rugged mountains of Calabria on the horizon behind it. The sun shines practically every day of the year here, and in Sicily, sun always equals warm temperatures. So what’s to be gloomy?
Because it is so picturesque and inviting, tourists flock to Taormina every month of the year. You will find them strolling along the blessedly flat main street, past a host of wonderful boutiques and pristine medieval homes – it takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of town to the other, where the Teatro Greco awaits you in all its panoramic splendor. Just below this street is a warren of little alleys lined with fantastic fish restaurants, night clubs, bars and cafes where life goes on long into the night. Amazingly enough, just ABOVE the main street hides a residential area filled with the villas of the rich and famous. Only 50 yards from the hustle and bustle is a country road lined with high-walled gardens where just about the only sound is the chirp of the birds in the palm trees. It is here that a pair of doctors, husband and wife, discovered this delightful Art Déco villa, fell in love with it and decided to turn it into a small, exclusive non-smoking hotel with only eight rooms. They opened their doors in the spring of 2006, and we think it will not be long before there is a hefty waiting list for those rooms.
They are all on the second and third floors of the home, reached by elevator or by the graceful spiraling staircase with its crystal chandeliers and stained-glass windows. Fresh flowers are everywhere, along with elegant furniture and sumptuous fabrics. Five rooms have sea views while three rooms have views of Mt. Etna. Some have patios that are divided from each other by espaliered lemon trees. All rooms have air conditioning, mini-bar, safe, direct-dial telephone, Internet access, and a private marble bathroom with hair dryer, telephone and towel warmer; some have a whirlpool bathtub with wall shower, while others have a Jacuzzi shower or double-size shower. The superior rooms have a single daybed for a child or adult; the suite has a double sleep sofa that can be for one adult or two children. Everyone is welcome on the roof for a delicious buffet breakfast with 360-degree views of the sea, the mountain and the Shangri-La that is Taormina.
