This tranquil upscale estate is way off the beaten track, but if you are beginning or ending your trip at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, we recommend it as a great place to spend a very relaxing and fascinating two or three days. Only 90 minutes from the airport, it is 7 km from the exquisite - and rarely visited - hilltown of Massa Marittima. Less than half an hour away is Piombino, where boats leave for a delightful day trip to the Isle of Elba. Practically the entire Tuscan coast here is a wildlife sanctuary, home to exotic birds who love the wide sandy beaches, deserted rock coves and welcoming pine forests. Only minutes from all this bounty, Villa Il Tesoro is the perfect place for seasoned travelers who want to include beauty and relaxation in their vacations. This little slice of heaven is not for the frantic tourist, determined to squeeze in as many venues as he can. No, this is a mecca for those who want to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, nose around in pristine villages where perhaps no one speaks English, play 18 holes at the famed Punta Ala Golf Club, dawdle over a gourmet dinner, and experience Italy as only a true connoisseur can.
If truth be told, you don't ever have to leave the grounds to enjoy your stay here. The 250-acre estate is a delightful combination of ancient olive trees, perfectly manicured vineyards, long rows of stately umbrella pines, and softly rolling hills. At one end of the property is the stunning swimming pool, surrounded by the noble stone houses that make up the borgo, or farming hamlet, which this property once was. Inside one of those buildings is the gourmet restaurant, where Chef Giuseppe prepares delicacies using many of the estate's own products. You'll be able to sample the property's Terrabianca wines, along with many others from Tuscany, in the ancient wine cellar where tastings are held.
T he exquisite accommodations at Villa Il Tesoro are dispersed among four of the lovingly restored stone farmhouses, on two floors. Numbering only 18, they include one junior suite (485 sq. ft., including a sleeping area with two twin beds or one king-size bed, and a sitting area), eleven suites (540 - 750 sq. ft., comprising an elegant bedroom with two twin beds or one king-size bed, and a separate living room), and five superior/deluxe suites (860 sq. ft., comprising a spacious bedroom with two twin beds or one king-size bed, and separate living room). All are non-smoking and feature air conditioning, direct-dial telephone with Internet DSL line, satellite TV, radio with CD player (European standard), wall safe, mini bar, window screens, and elegant bathrooms with stall shower, telephone, makeup mirror, hair dryer, robes and slippers. Some of the deluxe suites also have a whirlpool bathtub. A sofa bed for one or two people can be added in any type suite. Breakfast is served on the patio in warmer months, or by the fireplace in winter.
