If you are planning to visit Tuscany, a great idea is to base yourself in Siena, which is happily located at the very center of the region. From here you can take easy day trips to San Gimignano, Volterra, the Chianti, Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza and myriad charming hill towns that fortunately are not in every guidebook ever written! The only problem with using Siena as a base is that parking is hard to find and quite expensive. This is what makes Casa Siena such a fantastic place to stay -- it has its own gated parking space, right in front of the house! Not only is this rare convenience complimentary, but it is literally the very last spot before the town turns into a pedestrian island, which means that Casa Siena is both easy to reach and inside the city center. Once you get to Siena and take a stroll around, you will understand what a privilege this is.
Casa Siena occupies the ground floor of a two-storey brick building that dates back to the 9th century. The owners live upstairs, and you will have the 1400-square-foot apartment below them. Outside is your own patio, furnished with a large dining table and chairs beneath a sun umbrella. Step inside to enter an authentic Tuscan home, with terra cotta floors, impeccably restored brick arched ceilings, original stone walls and big double-paned windows looking onto the garden. The living room, furnished with two couches and several armchairs, also offers a satellite TV and opens onto the dining room, which features a large table and chairs for six, plus a second sitting area. Around the corner is the kitchen, with plenty of counter space, a range and oven, fridge/freezer and dishwasher, as well as the original wood-burning oven. You'll find a complete set of cookware and dishware in case you'd like to prepare a romantic home-cooked meal. This floor is completed by a powder room and a laundry room with a washing machine.
A staircase leads down to the spacious bedroom, which has a window facing the patio, a very large wardrobe, a queen bed or two twin beds, and a bathroom with stall shower. There is Internet access throughout, and the whole home is furnished with antique pieces, framed paintings and many local treasures to create a welcoming environment that feels like an authentic Tuscan home.
