The area just behind St. Mark's Square is called Castello. Traditionally it has been a working class neighborhood but now, as more and more "workers" flee to relatively easier and cheaper housing on the mainland, Castello is becoming more and more gentrified, and along with the new tenants come interesting eateries, boutiques and workshops. Similar to Rome's Trastevere, this is quickly turning into the trendy part of Venice - and yet the real Venetians are still there, shopping for seafood and vegetables in the morning, hanging out their laundry above the paved-over canals and campi, calling their kids home at night when the pasta has been tossed into the pot to boil.
Our building has occupied a beautiful corner of Castello since the 1200s, back in the days when the Venetian Republic built all her world-conquering ships at the nearby Arsenal. Take your choice of five apartments, each of which has beautiful Venetian marble floors, comfortable classic furniture, modern kitchen and bathroom, direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, hair dryer, wall safe, independent heating and central air conditioning.
San Giorgio is perfect for a single person or a couple. It has a large living room with double sofa bed, fully-equipped kitchenette with table and chairs, mini-fridge and stove, and a modern bathroom with shower. Canal view.
Tintoretto has a spacious living room with double sofa bed, dining room, kitchenette with mini-fridge and stove, separate bedroom with two single beds (or one double bed), and bathroom with stall shower. The bedroom overlooks a quiet courtyard.
Carpaccio has a spacious living room/dining room with wood-beamed ceiling and double sofa bed, separate kitchen, two bedrooms with two single beds (or one double bed), and bathroom with shower. Canal views.
Tiepolo has a spacious living room with double sofa bed and kitchenette, dining area, separate bedroom with two single beds (or one double bed), and big bathroom with stall shower. The bedroom overlooks the nearby scuola di San Giorgio.
Giorgione has a spacious dining room with wood-beamed ceiling, double sofa bed, kitchenette, two bedrooms with two single beds (or one double bed), and bathroom with shower.
