Campo de’ Fiori In-Town Apartment - Family Lodgings |

If you’ve been doing your reading, you know that the area around Rome’s lively and colorful outdoor market in Campo de’ Fiori is one of the most interesting and characteristic. This friendly warren of 500-year-old streets is animated by a mixture of seventh-generation Romans and trendy young people from the suburbs, all happily patronizing the unbelievable array of shops that occupy almost every door. Here you will find some of the best bargains in fashion, a few legendary grocery shops and bakeries, half a dozen trendy bars and cafes, and restaurants ranging from the lavish to the sparse to the exotic. Only a few yards from these eight impeccably appointed apartments is a tiny, nondescript door that opens onto an eatery that true Romans revere as a throwback to The Good Old Days: there is no menu here, because all they serve is fried baccalà (salt cod), served up in a square of butcher’s paper. If you’re looking for an authentic Roman neighborhood that offers lots to do, this is a very good choice indeed. It is also within easy walking distance of absolutely everything except the train station.
Just two minutes’ walk from Campo de’ Fiori and only one block from a major bus stop is a newly restored elevator building with seven air-conditioned apartments and one air-conditioned penthouse, whose owners have spared no expense to offer you a comfortable stay in the Eternal City. The smallest apartment, a deluxe one-bedroom flat that measures about 700 square feet, is on the third floor (which dates back to the Middle Ages, by the way). This very upscale non-smoking apartment has everything a discerning couple could desire, starting from the wine rack filled with prime vintages that greets you as you step through the front door. Beyond that is the state-of-the-art kitchenette, featuring a stove top with four electric burners, an oven, a full fridge, dishwasher, and plenty of small appliances, dishes and cookware. Next is the living room, furnished with two couches (one of which is a comfortable sleeper for one person) and a dining table; this room and the bedroom open onto a long, narrow balcony overlooking the inner courtyard, also furnished with a table and chairs. Because it faces the courtyard, the queen-bedded bedroom with ornamental fireplace is quiet, and you’ll have ample room for even the largest travel wardrobe in the separate dressing room (where you’ll also find the washing machine). At the end of the hall is the mosaic-tiled bathroom, with a brand-new walk-in shower and window onto the courtyard.
On the first, second, third and fourth floors are four identical apartments, each measuring about 1000 square feet and including a 400-square-foot living room with double sleep sofa and kitchenette, one bedroom with queen bed (250 square feet) and one bedroom with twin beds (250 square feet). Apartment #5 is a brand-new apartment which is identical except that the twin room has bunk beds. None of the twin beds can be joined to form a queen bed. Apartments #1, #4, #5 and #6 have one bathroom with shower and one with bathtub; Apartment #3 has two bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and wall shower, and one of its bedrooms has a single futon in addition to the queen bed.
On the fifth floor, the penthouse is a duplex featuring a living room with two sofas (one of which is a single sleeper). This room opens onto a very large furnished terrace. On the other side of the living room is the well-equipped eat-in kitchen with picture window. A closet-lined hall leads to the big master bedroom, which has a queen bed, extra-large wardrobe and one entire wall of windows; plus a twin bedroom, one bathroom with bathtub and one bathroom with stall shower. Up 14 steps to the top floor of the building, there is a single bedroom lined with windows and blessed with its own private terrace gacing St. Peter's dome.
Also occupying the same two floors of the building is the duplex apartment. It has an entryway, a master bedroom with queen bed, single bed, large wardrobe and several windows facing a Renaissance belltower, and a twin bedroom. Each of the bedrooms has its own en suite bathroom: the master has a bathtub and stall shower, while the twin has a stall shower. Completing this level are an eat-in kitchen with full fridge with icemaker, oven, range, dishwasher and washing machine, and a laundry room with clothes dryer and two wardrobes. Upstairs, the large living/dining room opens onto a spacious private terrace. This and the penthouse terraces offer unforgettable panoramic views of Roman rooftops, other flowering terraces, and several churches.
Each apartment has independent air conditioning and heating, DSL or wireless Internet access, satellite TV, washing machine and dryer (no dryer in the one-bedroom apartment or Apartment #5), microwave or oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, cook top, toaster, American coffeemaker, towel warmer, hair dryer, iron and board, good reading lights in the bedrooms, lots of closet space, and pretty linens and dishware. There is also a telephone for incoming calls in all apartments except the one-bedroom apartment and Apartments #3 and #5. Whether you will be in the neighborhood three days or three weeks, you are bound to go away with fond memories of these spacious apartments, furnished like warm, inviting homes to make your vacation a very special one.
