Size: sleeps 2+2 people; spacious living/dining room with double sleep sofa; ultra-modern kitchenette; big loft bedroom with fantastic en suite bathroom (walk-in shower).

Minimum stay: Three nights.
Disadvantages: No elevator (only 21 easy steps up); no Internet access, but there are numerous hot spots very nearby.
Car needed: No!

If we were lucky enough to own an apartment in the centro storico of Rome, we would hire the clever architect who managed to turn this rather small space into a bright, airy home with plenty of room for all the bells and whistles of today's busy life. Another of his or her magic tricks was to create a gem of ultra-modern Italian style inside a 400-year-old building in the middle of a neighborhood that goes back to the Dark Ages. As you make your way to the building, you will cross the daily market in Campo de' Fiori, pausing to pay your respects to the statue of Giordano Bruno, whose heretical beliefs about the cosmos caused him to be burnt at the stake here in the year 1600. Today it's the artichoke lady who occupies the infamous spot, harmlessly beheading vegetables that you will soon be purchasing for your dinner. But for now, on you go! Resist the temptation to stop at the amazing corner grocery shop (where you'll see baccalà soaking in a big zinc tub but only if it's Thursday); continue on down the narrow, graffiti-decorated alley for just a few more steps, then open your own front door, climb a quick-and-easy flight of 21 stairs, slip the key in the lock, and cross the threshold into the 21st century!

This gorgeous apartment is no mysterious lady; she presents herself in all her glory at first sight. To your left as you step in is the kitchenette, perfectly outfitted with an electric cooktop, oven, fridge, washing machine, kettle, toaster and all the dishes and cookware you'll need for those yummy Roman dinners or late-night snacks of cold cuts, cheese and wine. Sharing this big room are a desk, oversized double sleep sofa, dining table for 4, flat-screen satellite TV, DVD player, and two big windows overlooking the alley you just left behind. Take a peek, then turn around to see the spectacular loft under which the kitchenette has been tucked. A short flight of real stairs leads up to this beautiful king bedroom, served by a gorgeous modern bathroom with walk-in shower. Glass blocks and frosted glass bring all the sunlight from those windows right into this room, making it bright and cheerful as well as completely private. If there is one mystery in this lovely air-conditioned apartment, it would have to be the closet, ingeniously concealed halfway up the stairs to the loft!
