Florence Ciompi Apartments
|
We have been waiting two years for these extensive renovations to be completed and we are happy to say: it was well worth the wait! Spacious, elegant and comfortable, the 18 apartments are also conveniently located and offer many wonderful amenities including front desk reception, shared washer/dryers, and rarest of the rare, on-site parking. They occupy a 19th-century palazzo about 150 yards from Santa Croce, facing a delightful outdoor market designed in the 1500s by Vasari. Probably the only daily flea market in Italy, it is open every morning, afternoon and evening, and despite its small size it offers a nice selection of old lamps, books, jewelry and other objects from the recent and distant past. Even better, there is a fantastic covered food market just three blocks away, and a restaurant on the ground floor of the building.
Two elevators take you upstairs, where the apartments are arranged on five floors. Every unit has terracotta floors, excellent antique furniture, air conditioning, satellite TV, wireless Internet access, telephone with modem hook-up, big wardrobes and dressers, 62-inch wide sofa bed, and an ultra-modern kitchenette with oven, burners, dishwasher, full fridge/freezer and US coffeemaker. For folks who don’t like elevators, there is one apartment on the ground floor, Galileo Galilei. Measuring 860 square feet and sleeping 4+2, it faces the quiet inner courtyard and has a living room with table for four and sofa bed, a kitchen, a bedroom with queen bed, a twin room (queen bed on request), a bathroom with tub and another with stall shower. Also on this floor (with a separate entrance off the street) is Savonarola (430 sq. ft., sleeps 2). It is a studio featuring a living room with very good double sleep sofa, dining table and kitchenette, and a very large bathroom with oversize stall shower. Up a few steps on the mezzanine floor is Cosimo De Medici (325 sq. ft, sleeps 2), featuring a living room with kitchenette and dining table, a double bedroom, and a bathroom with stall shower.
Machiavelli (860 sq. ft.; sleeps 2+2) is on the first floor overlooking the market. It features an entry, large living room with table for four and sofa bed, separate kitchen, twin bedroom (queen bed on request) and bathroom with stall shower. Also facing the market is Dante (860 sq. ft.; sleeps 4+2). It has an entry, a large living room with kitchenette, double sofa bed and 19th-century frescoes, bedroom with twin beds (queen bed on request) and en suite bathroom with bathtub, and bedroom with queen bed and bathroom with stall shower. Boccaccio (1130 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2) is also on the first floor overlooking a side street. It has an entry, dining room, living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, bedroom with twin beds (queen bed on request) and en suite bathroom with bathtub, and bedroom with queen bed that has its own bathroom with stall shower. From the queen bedroom one can access the 590-square-foot private terrace, furnished with a dining table and chairs, and sun umbrella. Also on this side of the first floor is Petrarca (645 sq. ft., sleeps 2+2), featuring an entry, living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, twin bedroom (queen bed on request), and very large bathroom with stall shower. From the living room one accesses the 505-square-foot private furnished terrace. The last apartment on this side of the first floor is Guicciardini (750 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2). It offers a living room with kitchenette and sleep sofa, a hall leading to two double bedrooms, one with a queen size bed and one with twin beds (queen bed on request), and two bathrooms off the hall inside the apartment (one with tub and one with stall shower).
On the second floor we find Giotto (1235 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2). It overlooks the market and features an entry, large living room with frescoed ceiling, sofa bed and kitchenette, two double bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with twin beds (queen bed on request), and two bathrooms (one with tub, one with stall shower). Vasari (1290 sq. ft., sleeps 6+2) is also on this floor, overlooking the side street. It has a dining room with kitchenette, a queen bedroom and a twin bedroom (queen bed on request) that share a bathroom with stall shower, a living room with sofa bed, and a hall to a bedroom with queen bed and en suite bathroom with tub. Last on this floor is Botticelli (860 sq. ft., sleeps 2+2), which overlooks the market and has an entry, a living room with frescoed ceiling and sofa bed, a kitchen, twin bedroom (queen bed on request), and a bathroom with stall shower.
Up a few steps is the mezzanine, where we find Cimabue and Masaccio. Cimabue (645 sq. ft., sleeps 2+2) overlooks the side street and features a large entrance, huge living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, twin bedroom (queen bed on request), and very large bathroom with stall shower. Masaccio (755 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2) overlooks the side street and offers a living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, a hall leading to two double bedrooms, one with a queen size bed and one with twin beds (queen bed on request), and two bathrooms off the hall inside the apartment (one with tub and one with stall shower).
On the third floor, Michelangelo (1240 sq. ft., sleeps 4+4) overlooks the market and has an entry, large living room with sofa bed and kitchenette, sleep loft with double bed (accessed through one of the bedrooms), two double bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with twin beds (queen bed on request), and two bathrooms (one with tub, one with stall shower). Donatello (860 sq. ft., sleeps 2+2) also overlooks the market and has an entry, living room with frescoed ceiling, kitchenette and sofa bed, a twin bedroom (queen bed on request), and a bathroom with stall shower. Brunelleschi (645 sq. ft., sleeps 2+2) overlooks the side street and offers an entry, living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, twin bedroom (queen bed on request), and very large bathroom with stall shower. Leonardo (940 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2) offers great views from its windows. It has a living room with double sofa bed, large kitchen, two double bedrooms with queen beds, one bathroom with bathtub and one bathroom with stall shower. Lastly, Ghiberti (755 sq. ft., sleeps 4+2) overlooks the side street and features a living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, a hall leading to two double bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with twin beds (queen bed on request), and two bathrooms off the hall inside the apartment (one with tub and one with stall shower).
Cellini (860 sq. ft., sleeps 4 + 2) is on the fourth floor and offers some lovely views. It is four steps up from the elevator and has a living room with kitchenette and sofa bed, a twin bedroom (queen bed on request), a queen bedroom (accessed through the twin room only), and a giant bathroom with stall shower. Florence's ornate synagogue can be admired from the living room and from the bed of the queen bedroom! Vespucci (1025 sq. ft., sleeps 4 + 2) is on the same floor and offers very panoramic views of the Synagogue and the hills of Fiesole from its windows and its 325-square-foot terrace, furnished with a dining table and chairs, and lounge chair. It has a living room with double sofa bed, kitchen, two double bedrooms with queen beds, one bathroom with bathtub and one bathroom with stall shower. Lorenzo Il Magnifico (755 sq. ft., sleeps 3 + 1) is a very special penthouse on the fourth and fifth floors. On the lower floor it offers a living room with single sleep sofa and kitchenette, as well as a single bedroom and bathroom with stall shower; 17 steps up on the upper floor we find a spectacular double bedroom with three walls of windows and a bathroom with round shower. The city tells the owners that this is the highest room in Florence, and the views certainly go to prove it.
