Monti Terrace Apartment

Ask any Rome oldtimer what the most authentic neighborhoods in the historic center are and he or she will undoubtedly mention Trastevere, of course. But they'll probably also mention Monti, a tiny quartiere that's not usually written about in guidebooks. Hidden halfway between the Spanish Steps and the Coliseum, it is actually one of the Eternal City's best-kept secrets, and like many treasures, it's been right there under everyone's noses all the time.

Measuring barely more than 20 blocks square, Monti occupies the hill behind Trajan's Market. At its edges are the Forum, Santa Maria Maggiore, Via Nazionale and Via Cavour, yet it has none of the late-19th-century vehicular clamor and architectural clumsiness that we usually associate with the area around the Coliseum. Monti's 4- and 5-story buildings date back as far as the 1400s and are painted the terra cotta, umber and burnt sienna colors that make pictures of Rome so spectacular. The streets are lined with "real people" shops whose owners sell not souvenirs but the staples of everyday life: brooms, fresh tomatoes, extension cords, whole chickens, casual dresses.... It is the epitome of Roman life: you can stand on one corner and see a 1st-century stone wall, a 14th-century brick tower, and a 21st-century traffic sign complete with graffiti!

At the top of Monti there is a lush botanical garden surrounded by a few apartment buildings. The 540-square-foot terrace that belongs to this apartment faces the tall trees and tropical plantings of the garden; on sunny days throughout the year you will be able to enjoy a meal, a cup of coffee or an aperitif here, thanks to the table, chairs and sun loungers ranged amongst the potted trees and flowers. If it's too chilly or wet, you can still enjoy the view from the brand new eat-in kitchen just inside the terrace. Here, between wood-beamed ceilings and ancient terracotta floors, you will be able to prepare any type of meal, thanks to the professional cooktop, stove, and dishwasher, and a full compliment of dishware and cookware.

You will have to climb four and a half flights of stairs to reach this 1000-square-foot sanctuary on the top floor, but our local agents will help you with your luggage, and the climb is well worth the effort, paying off in silence and sunlight. The large living room has a full row of clerestory windows on one wall, as well as a big picture window, making it bright and airy. The spectacular wood-beamed ceilings add character, and the eclectic furnishings make it a warm and inviting place to hang out after your day of sightseeing. A desk in the nook by the picture window is below the stairs which lead up to an open mezzanine, where overnight guests or young kids can sleep on a double mattress. Also on this level are another desk with DSL access, and a half-bath.

The other bathroom is off the living room. Beautifully restored, it has great lighting, a window, a large stall shower, hair dryer and washing machine. The two bedrooms are also off the living room. One is very spacious and features a single bed, a second single pull-out bed, loads of storage space, and another row of clerestory windows. The master bedroom may be the most romantic room in town: nestled beneath the low wood-beamed eaves, it has just enough room for a queen bed, two closets and a couple of good reading lights.
