This dreamy apartment is in one of Rome's most interesting neighborhoods, wedged between the Tiber River and the Forum. It was right here that the oldest Jewish community in Europe was actually founded in Rome. For centuries the Jews lived amicably in the Eternal City, until 1555, when Pope Paul IV decided to segregate them inside a "ghetto." Very quickly, walls were erected, along with three gates that were locked every night to enforce curfew. Among the many restrictions that now befell the community, perhaps the most humiliating was the obligation to attend weekly services at the tiny Catholic church that still stands in the quarter today. It was not until 1870, when the last remnant of the Papal States was overthrown, that the ghetto walls were finally torn down. But despite over three centuries of discrimination and hardship, the district's most tragic moment did not come till October 16, 1943, when the Nazi forces occupying Rome stormed its many apartment houses, rounded up over 1000 Jews and deported them to Auschwitz. Ironically, that number would have been much higher if not for the ancient Romans, because many residents were able to escape through the catacombs that still exist under every single street in this part of the city. Today, il ghetto is a lively place once more, teeming with traditional bakeries and restaurants selling delicacies that are part of the very unique Roman-Jewish cuisine.

Right in the middle of this area is a 17th-century aristocratic palazzo with a wrought-iron gate guarded by two ancient stone lions. Inside is a spectacular staircase, which you'll be delighted to admire before stepping into the elevator that will take you to your second-floor home. The air-conditioned apartment measures 700 square feet. It is sunny and bright, and thanks to its location overlooking a mostly pedestrian street, it is also quiet. The front door opens onto the large living room, which features a roomy sectional couch that can comfortably sleep two, plus a separate dining area. Above the living room is the mezzanine, where a single bed nestled in an alcove is perfect for a child. Off the living room is the modern kitchen, equipped with a full fridge/freezer, stove, oven, dishwasher and washing machine. A door leads out to the completely private terrace, which is furnished with a table and chairs. Also off the living room is the big double bedroom, with loads of closet space. Every room has hardwood floors and ancient wood-beamed ceilings. Although this apartment is spacious enough for a family of five, we think its cozy, calm atmosphere makes it truly ideal for a couple. Combined with the exciting neighborhood outside, it is bound to enrich your stay in Rome and provide a lifetime of wonderful memories.
