Roma Trastevere

Trastevere is Rome’s equivalent to the Left Bank and Greenwich Village. Beloved of artists and young people, it is brimming with colorful shops, tiny restaurants and cool cafes, as well as ancient cobblestone streets and miniature baroque squares. Although it is right across the river from the historic center and just down from St. Peter’s, within walking distance of everything, it has always remained a world unto itself with a slightly different atmosphere than the rest of Rome. Though this is one of the city’s most ancient corners, fewer tourists are seen among its narrow winding alleys, which belong to the locals and their imperious Roman cats.

This very well-kept apartment is in a building that’s centuries old, and the gorgeous wood-beamed ceilings attest to that, but the unit was very recently restored to bring it well into the 21st century. There is air conditioning throughout, the appliances are state-of-the-art, and the bathroom is tiny but very modern. After climbing only 20 steps from street level, you walk into the foyer, which has two large wardrobes. On one side is the sunny living room, with a double sleep sofa, a desk, a dining area, and two tall windows overlooking the pedestrian-zone street below. From here you can admire the ancient stuccos on the building across the street, as well as keep an eye on your neighbors’ comings and goings (like any self-respecting Roman!).

On the other side of the foyer is the galley kitchen, where the owners have ingeniously managed to accommodate a small fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, sink and four gas burners. A window at one end overlooks the quiet courtyard. Next door is the small but modern bathroom, which has a stall shower. Completing the apartment is a bedroom with queen bed, which also faces the courtyard.
