The location of the dream-come-true apartment is two blocks from Piazza Navona, high above a centuries-old lane lined with some of Europe's most elegant antique shops. The paint crumbles on many ancient façades, but this only makes them more picturesque. Whether you wander through this tiny enclave by day or by night, it feels like you are strolling along the hallways of a cozy private residence, yet turn one corner and you are suddenly standing in what many consider to be Europe's most breathtaking square. Want to feel as though you’ve stepped through the Looking Glass into 16th-century Rome? Then we suggest you make this rooftop aerie your casa romana.

As we have stated elsewhere, the thing any true Roman desires most of all is a home with a terrace. So imagine what the unknowing passersby below would think if they could see the TWO gigantic covered terraces gracing this elegant apartment! The larger one runs the entire width of the building: half of it is furnished with table and chairs and is accessed from the kitchen and dining room; the other half is an extension of the living room and is furnished with sofa and armchairs. A spiral staircase leads up to a second, even larger covered terrace with a round table and chairs, just perfect for watching the warm Roman sun sink behind the Renaissance buildings as you sip your pre-dinner aperitif. From late March right through to November, these magnificent outdoor spaces will add an unforgettable dimension to your vacation.

In case you're wondering, this apartment is just as spectacular inside as out. Totally renovated in 2008, it has gorgeous dark wood floors and warm-colored walls, tall arched ceilings, crown moldings and large French doors throughout. The premium-quality furnishings are accented by Oriental antiques, exotic handicrafts and framed prints. Take the elevator to the fourth floor, step into this tranquil oasis and prepare to enjoy a truly relaxing holiday. Beyond the spacious entry is the living room, where you can lounge on the two Chinese-red sofas and watch satellite TV. Next door is the elegant dining room, followed by the fully equipped kitchen, which is brand new and has loads of storage space, an oven, four gas burners, full fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. All three of these rooms have ceiling fans and open onto the terrace. We visited this apartment on a sweltering August day, but the gentle breezes from the terrace kept all the rooms delightfully cool.

Around the corner from the kitchen is a hallway leading to the sleeping quarters. First there's a small bedroom with a very good single bed, a desk where you can check your email via wireless, loads of closet space, and an en suite half-bathroom. Next door, off the hall, is a very large marble bathroom, which has a tub. At the end of the hall is the master bedroom, which features a queen bed, big walk-in closet, dresser, wardrobe, and best of all, a large picture window overlooking the rooftops of Rome. You'll wake up to the sight of birds wheeling above the Palace of Justice, and before you doze off at night, you'll see the lights glittering on the other terraces that grace the Roman skyline. Sogni d'oro! Sweet dreams in Rome!
