  Siena Duomo

The heart of any Italian city is its cathedral, and Siena is no exception. Originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263, the Duomo was enlarged in the 14th century, a time of great wealth and power for Siena. So prosperous was the city that plans were made to expand the cathedral into a great church that would dwarf even St. Peter's in Rome. Expansion got underway in 1339, but in 1348, the Black Death swept through the city and killed 80% of Siena's population. The giant cathedral was never completed, and the half-finished walls remain today as a monument to Siena's ambition and one-time wealth. With its lavishly decorated façade and polychrome marble flanks, it is among the most stunning examples of Italian gothic architecture. And it is just that façade which will face you each morning as you throw open your window shutters, because the church is directly across the street from this newly restored 600-square-foot apartment.

You will need to climb 62 steps to get to your casa senese, but the payoff is a bright, sunny, quiet dwelling with bird's-eye views of the city and the surrounding countryside. No pitter-patter of little feet overhead, because this is on the top floor. You enter the living room, which has a couch, chairs, dining area and front row view of the Duomo’s amazing façade. The brand-new kitchen is a separate room also offering the same view, plus a stove, range, full-size fridge, washing machine, cappuccino machine and everything you need to make meals using the delicious local specialties. The apartment is completed by one bedroom with queen bed, one bedroom with single bed, and a bathroom with stall shower. Both bedrooms have the Duomo view, as well as standing fans. Heating throughout makes this an ideal place to spend the best months of the year in Tuscany -- from October through April. And just downstairs are loads of shops, as well as the weekly market, which you won't want to miss!
