| Siena Palio |
|
If you are planning to stay a while in Siena, you are most likely fascinated by its unique, exciting pageant called Il Palio. Even if you aren't in town during the actual event (held each year on July 2 and August 16), it's easy to recreate the atmosphere, because Il Palio is the be-all and end-all of life for most of the city's residents. Stay in this 970-square-foot apartment only 200 yards from the shell-shaped square where the pageant and culminating horse race are held, and you will be in the very thick of the whole experience . You'll see the neighborhood pennants flying from wrought-iron rings on the stone façades of the medieval buildings. You can visit any number of neighborhood museums, where a mind-boggling collection of mementos -- some going back centuries! -- is kept. Wander into the churches where each neighborhood's horse is blessed on the morning of the race. And be sure to spend plenty of time in your OWN neighborhood, which includes the mighty Campo, the gently sloping brick-paved square that is unlike any other in the world. As you sip your morning cappuccino, gaze upon the majestic tower above Town Hall and let your mind conjure up the sights and sounds produced by tens of thousands of ecstatic fans whose whole year has been consumed with the preparations for their own stunning victory on this one day!
Your Siena home is one short flight of stairs up from the street in a very historical building in the San Martino quarter of Siena. Recently restored and filled with exquisite frescoes and beautiful high-quality antiques, the 1100-square-foot apartment has terracotta floors, high ceilings and big windows. The small living room is furnished with a couch, as well as a big-screen TV with satellite reception. Next door is the eat-in kitchen, all brand new and furnished with a cooktop, microwave oven, fridge/freezer, toaster and plenty of dishes and cookware. The sleeping quarters include two large bedrooms, each with marble floors, standing fans and a gorgeous big double bed. One room has its own en suite bathroom, while the second bathroom is down the hall and also features a washing machine. Each bathroom has a great stall shower.
