Trastevere is Rome’s equivalent to the Left Bank and Greenwich Village. Beloved of artists and young people, it is brimming with colorful shops, tiny restaurants and cool cafes, as well as ancient cobblestone streets and miniature baroque squares. Although it is right across the river from the historic center and just down from St. Peter’s, within walking distance of everything, it has always remained a world unto itself with a slightly different atmosphere than the rest of Rome. Even within its own borders, this fascinating district is split into two extremely different realms: the trendy part is north of busy Viale Trastevere, while the little enclave to the south, where this charming apartment lies, is much quieter, still steeped in a tranquil, mystic air. Though this is one of the city’s most ancient corners, it is almost never mentioned in the guidebooks, so tourists are rarely seen among its narrow winding alleys, which belong to the locals and their imperious Roman cats. You might say that this is Rome’s most coquettish area, because behind its doors hide some of its oldest, tiniest and most astounding chapels and cloisters, calmly waiting to offer their secrets to the curious.
On the first floor of just such an ancient building, reached via a short staircase and a covered outdoor walkway, is this delightfully furnished 560-square-foot air-conditioned apartment. Sunny and inviting, it has comfortable furnishings, warm colors, soft upholstery and plenty of space to hang out in. The layout of the rooms makes it perfect for a couple or for a family with two young children. From the walkway, you enter the large living room with a double sofa bed, armchairs, dining table and chairs, and modern kitchenette with gas burners, electric oven and fridge. Through an archway is the master bedroom, with a queen bed, wardrobe, and en suite bathroom with stall shower and washing machine. If your group has a total of 6 adults and 4 children, you can also rent Roma Antica, which is just down the block.
