Trevi Fountain

If you don’t mind 45 steps up to the third floor, this 1185-square-foot apartment will reward you with blessed silence and wonderful sunshine. It also offers another feature that many first-time travelers will relish: round-the-clock security by the guards who protect no less than Italy’s President! That’s because it sits on the very short (and steep!) block that connects the Quirinale Palace (home of the Great Man himself) to the Trevi Fountain. As you can imagine, absolutely NO pedestrians except residents are allowed on this delightful ancient street, whose entrance is constantly guarded by members of Italy’s crack Carabinieri police force. What this means for you is security but even more important, it means peace and quiet – two commodities that are sometimes hard to come by in the centers of European cities!

But don’t let all that hallowed seclusion fool you: only 100 yards from your door are an excellent outdoor fruit and vegetable market, many grocery shops and the world’s most famous fountain; only 5-10 minutes beyond lie the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Forum, the Pantheon, and the main station. If St. Peter’s or the Coliseum are your destination, you’ll get there by subway, which stops just a 10-minute walk from the house.

So, let’s say you have come home from a thrilling day of sightseeing. You’ve made your way past your new friends, the Carabinieri, strolled 100 yards farther to your door, and climbed the stairs of your 400-year-old renovated luxury building. You enter your spacious living room and the first thing you notice is the superb air conditioning or heating, depending on the season. Next, you’ll probably admire the wood floors and soaring wood-panelled cathedral ceiling. There’s plenty of room to lounge and watch the English-language news, or use the modern kitchenette to put together a delicious snack of local cheese, meats and wine while you relive the events of the day. Completing this floor of the duplex apartment is a powder room.

Your sleeping quarters are on the upper floor. Here you’ll find a bedroom with a king-sized bed, another bedroom with two twin beds (which cannot be joined), and a bathroom with bathtub and hand-held shower. Throughout, the apartment has wood floors, as well as loads of closet and shelf space.
