This extremely affordable apartment is right in the midst of Baroque Rome, very near the French Embassy in Piazza Farnese. Although the latter is one of the most extraordinary palaces in ancient Rome, the French government pays just one Eurocent per year for its rent, in exchange for letting the Italians have one of the most extravagant palaces in central Paris for the same sum. Well, as we all know, it pays to be rich!! No matter, you can live down the street from this magnificent building, which was co-authored by Michelangelo and has some of Rome's most renowned frescoes on its first floor, visible anytime thanks to a set of large picture windows. The piazza itself, which will be your home turf if you stay in this 915-square-foot duplex, is adorned by two immense fountains made from the original marble tubs from the ancient Roman baths. And like any self-respecting piazza, it also offers three restaurants and two of the most popular coffee bars in town.

M any of old Rome's ornate rooftops, leafy terraces and graceful church domes can be seen from the spacious furnished terrace atop this air-conditioned apartment. Of course the one you will recognize right away is St. Peter's, which looks close enough to touch with your fingertips. But we wager that you will be able to name some other domes before you pack your bags, as relaxing on the terrace is one of the perks of choosing this third-floor apartment to be your casa romana. After climbing a narrow winding spiral staircase of 55 steps, you step into a foyer that opens onto the sunny living room, which has a single sleep sofa and chairs, a dining table, Italian TV and telephone, plus a bright kitchenette with cooktop and fridge. Also on this floor is a small bedroom with king bed and wardrobe, as well as a bathroom with bathtub and wall shower. A spiral staircase leads up to the second bedroom, which has two single beds and its own bathroom with shower. Off this bedroom is the furnished terrace.
