As we often find ourselves repeating, it's pretty tough to find noise-free lodgings in the heart of any European city. So when we stumbled upon this delightful complex of upscale apartments, we were thrilled! Located a quick five-minute stroll from Piazza del Popolo, this beehive of homes is literally an extension of a lush, green bluff at the western edge of Villa Borghese, Europe's largest urban park. In much the same fashion as the towns on the Amalfi Coast, this palazzo seems to grow out of the hillside, an ageold architectural device that keeps the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter. The other side of the building fronts onto a beautifully landscaped courtyard, which provides a 100-foot barrier between the apartments and the street below. The stunning result of this ingenuity is (a) blessed silence, (b) gorgeous views of the sun setting behind Roman rooftops and (c) a downtown location that feels like a countryside retreat.
If you will be arriving in Rome by car, you might find it convenient to drive here and drop off your bags. No parking is allowed inside the gated property, and on-street parking is not always easy to grab, so we don't recommend keeping a car while you are in Rome, but it's nice to be able to drop off the bags and then just zip along the side of the park for five minutes to the rental agency (we will be happy to help you arrange this rental and drop-off). No matter how you arrive, your friendly hosts will accompany you to your digs and it will only be then that you'll understand the unique nature of this property. An elevator whisks you to the top floor, where you'll find Apartments Two and Three. The largest units, each of these has a big living room with twin sleep sofas, dining room, separate kitchen, three bedrooms, three bathrooms with tub or stall shower, and a huge terrace with a section for sunbathing as well as a covered section for outdoor dining. The master bedroom in Apartment Two has a fireplace; if you rent Apartment Three for 8 people, you will also have a fourth bedroom with en suite bathroom.
For smaller families, or couples, now the fun begins. From the top floor, a stairway set into the hillside leads down to Apartments Four, Five, Six, Seven and Eight. Each of these is blessed with a roomy sitting/dining area with large picture windows, a separate fully-equipped kitchen, and its own partially covered terrace or balcony furnished with a table and chairs. Apartment Four's large terrace leads to a big living room, separate kitchen, and two twin/queen bedrooms, each with its own bathroom (one tub and one stall shower). Apartment Seven has a big terrace, a sitting room with two excellent daybeds, a hall bathroom with tub and, on the other side of the kitchen, a master bedroom with en suite bathroom with stall shower. Apartment Five has a double sleep sofa in the living room, a kitchen opening onto the patio, a panoramic master bedroom and a hall bathroom with stall shower. Apartments Six and Eight are suitable for families since each has only one bathroom. Six has a patio, a panoramic living room with two daybeds, a small but fully-equipped kitchen, and a twin/queen bedroom with en suite bathroom with tub. Eight has a beautiful living room with double sleep sofa, stone wall and huge picture windows, a small but adequate kitchen opening onto the patio, and a twin bedroom with marble stall shower in the en suite bathroom.
Down on the ground floor, Apartment One offers complete privacy. From the huge, fully-furnished terrace, you enter the kitchen and continue through to the dining nook. Beyond that is the living room, which also opens onto the terrace. Next to that is a twin/queen bedroom (also opening onto the terrace) with en suite bathroom with tub. Across the hall is a suite with a huge walk-in closet, a hall bathroom with oversize stall shower, and a queen bedroom opening onto the terrace. The apartment is completed by another suite which also has a walk-in closet, hall bathroom with stall shower and twin/queen bedroom opening onto the terrace.
No matter which apartment you choose at Villa Borghese Garden Retreat, you will have unusually generous storage space, plenty of room to spread out and relax after your day of sightseeing, at least one flat-screen TV showing foreign-language channels, wireless Internet access, a dishwasher and washing machine, full freezer/fridge, oven or toaster oven, microwave, US coffeemaker, and a full complement of dishes, utensils, pots and pans, bed and bath linens. Almost all the apartments have air conditioning; those which don't are the coolest, and the rooms have large ceiling fans. This is truly a five-star property, one of the nicest we have encountered in Rome and one that will leave you with many a fond memory of your stay.
