Tuscany & Orvieto from Rome

On this memorable day, your lecture-guide takes you through luscious scenery to quaint settings and destinations that are emblematic of Tuscany and Umbria. The day begins with a drive to Orvieto, where you visit what many believe is Italy's most beautiful church. This Citadel City is also famous for its wine and pottery. You have time to experience both, wandering through its picturesque medieval alleyways. Click here for more details about Orvieto.

Next you stop by a Tuscan masterpiece, the former estate of Iris Origo, a wealthy American who married a penniless Italian aristocrat at the beginning of the 20th century and transformed an arid wasteland into one of the finest Tuscan villa gardens in existence. Not only is the story of this breathtaking place fascinating (its brave owner also hid US servicemen from the Nazis during World War II), but it also offers some of the most astounding views over Southern Tuscany. Its setting is unrivaled.

After a pause for lunch you'll wend your way down the most famous road in Tuscany, the white dirt path that curves its way through lush Tuscan countryside, past lone cypresses and rugged crete, first to Bagni Vignoni, a tiny village whose main square is actually an ancient thermal pool, then to the quintessential Renaissance hill town -- Pienza -- and finally to Montepulciano, famous for the narrow streets, charming churches and local red Nobile di Montepulciano. You will have a tasting of the latter delicacy at a local winery. It is all part of what makes Tuscany one of Europe's premier destinations. You will return to Rome with a new understanding of this area's agricultural richness and cultural wealth.
